Proper Indian Restaurants in London

Maybe the Wolfie man could delete all irrelevant, rubbish posts.

Many thanks - I wish to archive this thread.

:)

Jai Krishna on Stroud Green Road in Finsbury Park is a fab veggie indian. It's been there for years. And it's cheap too

Actually, Masala Zone are pretty authentic, imho. I love their grand thalis. Pretty cheap for central London too.

ObDisclaimer: I have eaten in India.

I was really underwhelmed with the Masala Zone in Islington. We went there from work for a dinner with 8 or so of us, and most of them were "oh this is wonderful", but I must admit to thinking the dosa was p#poor, and the thali wasn't up to much.

There's an indian caff on Turnpike Lane I use a lot. They microwave the curry with the rice on top. The chef is a really fat guy - always a good sign. They don't do dosa's, but they do do a proper naan. And it's always got the locals eating there.

...

Not been to the Islington one, just the Soho branch. Will have to take a trip there so I can compare.

Innit, my favourite restauraunt in the world.

And I aint been to India but out Indian mates swear by it

I would wholeheartedly back up this an Orang's suggestion. Mirch Masala is bloody fine.

And yes I have been to India. More than once. And I've got a bit of a tan and speak Malayalam too. So there..

I bet Maggot's only being served tourist curries anyway...

;) :p

Nah, do yourself a favour, if you're going to Islington, go up Chapel Street to the Indian Veg at the top.

£2.95 for as much as you can eat.

You can have three good meals for the price of a poor thali in the Masala Zone.

Brussel Sprout curry I've had there.

And when they do their mutter paneer, it's the mutter paneer you compare all others to for the rest of your days :)

Used to go there in the early 80's, good to hear it's still doing well.

What's the one next to the Indian High Commission on Aldwych, always appears to be full of staff from the High Commission, so must be pretty decent.
yes this one is excellent-up some stairs- is it called the India club?

I would not recommend the place on the Strand that Book Club has their curry at - that was disgusting.

Yep

You'll also find that with the place in Chapel Market the more you go there the less you like it.. its really all quite fatty stuff.

Loads of recommendations. Did people read my initial post?

Have you been to India and found somewhere that serves indian food thats like it.

Been accused of being a snob, which I totally accept, but I want 'proper' Indian food when I get back. Given that there are so many people from India there, its very suprising that the food so radically different in taste.

Well, what sort of Indian food do you want? I'm afraid there is a shortage of natives cooking tasty bites by the road, and the kids won't serve you chai through the windows of the train, nor will you have the thrill of actually drinking the water they serve and feeling well hard about it...

The India Club is on the Strand, it is a terrible tourist trap in my opinion, but maybe I just went on a bad day. Well, 3 seperate bad days.
I never saw any staff from the India High Commission in there?

That's the one I was talking about - horrible pokey little place and rubbish food - I would have walked out if it wasn't for the scintillating company and ed's reading of erotic fiction

Have you seen Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom?
You know the bit with the flyblown village Indy visits after sliding down the mountain on the big inflatable?
That's what the food's like

All Hollis did was spend one day in India, got the arse as its a dirty hell hole and pissed off to Goa to experience true India with all his two weeker mates.*

Well, might have some contenders in this thread.... Wonder if I get back before this gets deleted.

*Told you I was a snob

East Ham has a few places that do food JUST like in India - right down to the metal plates and metal cups, and masala dosas. There's a place like that called Fantastic or Marvellous or something, somewhere on High Street North. it's about 2 quid for a dosa. It's just a cafe, but is the proper authentic 'just like you're in india' vibe.

No, I just have exqusite taste.
I also have an Indian friend who swears by it and it's always full of South East Asian families which is surely a good sign,
So nuur

It's full of Thais and Malaysians, but nobody from the Indian subcontinent, or with roots therein?

You must admit that masala dosas are pretty stonking though.

I know, I was just being pedantic - technically the subcontinent is South rather than South East asia though :p :)
