*prisoner solidarity

Siyanda Mngaza is a young woman serving four and a half years after an incident where she maintains she was defending herself from a racist attack, and she turns 23 on Friday. From her campaign's instagram:
Siyanda will turn 23 years old on Friday! It breaks our hearts to know that she will spend another birthday in prison and not with her family and friends. However we must continue to lift Siyanda’s spirits and let her know we are all thinking of her. We appreciate all of the support that you have shown so far and would love it if you could continue that by sending Siyanda a birthday card. If you would like to send one then please visit the section of the Free Siyanda website where you can do so. There is already a birthday card template there, so all you have to do is write your message. If you would prefer to send your own, then you are more than welcome and the address is also on the website.

Link to send an online card/message is here, to send an actual one her address is:

I had not heard about this case before.

Having read the website and some of their Instagram posts, I have now signed the petition, sent her a birthday message via the website, and written out a proper card to be posted in the morning.

Many thanks to you for spreading the word here.

Some slightly more positive news:
BREAKING: 6 out of 8 activists from @xrnorth & Palestine Action have been told they will NOT be charged. They occupied and destroyed Elbit’s factory in #Oldham, exposing Israel’s murderous trade to the world.

Only two of the brave activists have now been charged with criminal damage of £5112. A figure which is vastly lower than what activists were initially told.

Are Elbit running scared once again if facing up to their crimes in court? Either way, we’re not stopping until we #ShutElbitDown for good!

Crossposting from the main ktb thread:

On Friday 30th July, five people were sentenced to over 14 years between them. Four people were given sentences of over three years for riot.
These five people are the first to receive custodial sentences for the confrontation with the police outside Bridewell Police Station at the Kill the Bill demonstration on 21st March. However, over 75 people have been arrested, 28 of them have now been charged. Two people are currently on remand in Horfield prison.
The sentences are:
  • BL 3 years 11 months
  • KA 3 years 6 months
  • SQ 3 years 3 months
  • KS 3 years 6 months
  • YS 5 months

What happened on 21st March was an outpouring of rage against the violence of the police. The crowd fought back after police officers attacked the crowd with batons and riot shields. Pepper spray was used indiscriminately, people were charged with police horses. The protesters fought back, seizing police riot shields, helmets and batons to defend themselves. By the end of the evening several police vehicles had been set on fire.
We are writing this statement to make clear that we support those who have been sentenced today, and that we are proud of them for fighting back. We need to be ready to defend ourselves against the police, and stand with those facing repression and criminalisation.
Communities across the UK face violence at the hands of the police every day, but they only call it violence when we fight back!
The Policing Bill is an attempt by the state to increase its repressive powers to attack our communities, and to lock up even more of us. Our movements need to build our own strength, to defend ourselves and to fight back like the Bristol Kill the Bill defendants did on 21st March.
As we have seen, Bristol will not stand by silently. The people of this city know how to resist. We need to organise to support those incarcerated, but we need support from comrades across the UK and internationally to do this, please consider donating to our crowdfunder here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/ktb-prisoner-support-fund

Following recent protest action at Maghaberry Prison, the family of John Paul Wootton are now calling upon the current Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, Ronnie Armour, to intervene to help end the ongoing acts of discrimination against their son, brother, uncle and miscarriage of justice victim, John Paul Wootton.

On behalf of John Paul, the family have launched a letter and email campaign which directly highlights the issues behind the ongoing acts of discrimination he faces on a daily basis, while being held within Maghaberry.

We, the family of John Paul Wootton, ask you to please support our call to demand that Ronnie Armour, Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, immediately ends all acts of discrimination against John Paul.

Please sign the following letter of protest, email and/or write to:

Ronnie Armour
Director General
Northern Ireland Prison Service

For the attention to the Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service:

It has come to my attention that John Paul Wootton, a person you hold in your custody is being subjected to discriminatory practices.

John Paul has attempted to avail of opportunities open to other prisoners however he has unfortunately been blocked without justification, this is wrong.

For example, he has been applied to take part in peers support and mentoring schemes, requested social activity and asked with regret to the prisons regimes, yet despite meeting appropriate criteria, these have not been facilitated.

Over the years and in an ongoing bases, John Paul has had to deal with harassment such as regular sleep disruption unfair punitive actions both formal and informal, and more recently restrictions on his communications with the outside world. Formal complaints about his treatment have been ignored.

A transfer to Magilligan prison has been identified as a solution to many of these problems, as well as opening up specific educational opportunities. However despite a two year wait, John Paul remains in Maghaberry.

I write to object to this treatment. John Paul should be given equitable access to any opportunities and all harassment should end. A move to Magilligan should be facilitated without delay.

I hope these matters could then be brought to a close.

Yours sincerely

Tomorrow come and support Kill The Bill prisoners by making cards, writing letters, painting banners in a creative space for solidarity.

In March thousands of peaceful protesters took to the streets of Bristol to demonstrate against the plans to give the police increased powers, to fight for or human right to protest and to protect the ways of lives of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities. Due to a heavy police presence with police brutality the protests turned nasty and many protesters were left injured and arrested.

78 protesters were arrested. 8 are now in prison.

Let's send them an abundance of love to show solidarity.

Tomorrow 4pm, next to the M32 skate park.

Some art materials will be provided but please also bring your own if you have.

A pair of letter-sending tool things:

Think they're both from this week.

Shit news from Bristol:
Two more defendants sentenced today:

Just to remind everyone, that fundraiser is:

On a more positive note, Kevin Berry of the Vaughn 17 is getting out, and there's a fundraiser for his release - he spent pretty much all of the Trump administration in solitary confinement after (allegedly) being part of a prison riot in January 2017:
