post your rubbish tunez

Finally decided to dip my toes in again. After finally working out how to basically get Cubase to make a noise my first music in four years turned out to be....... A waltz.

It's quite pretty. I'll pop it up when I've finished it which won't be too long as I want to keep it simple.

This is not good and I know it's not good and not in a false modesty really I'm a total narcisist sort of way. But it took no effort and I'm sort of entertained by it. Snippet of an improvised Sun Ra cover.

Version 2

Short improv. I was going for a bit of campy Kevin Ayers something or other but that didn't come out and I just said what I saw instead.

A couple more short instrumental improvs on my beat up old classical guitar with deadbeat old strings and a snapped d string. Recording on this laptop mike, you just wouldn't want anything else. It's going to come out tinny and I'm trying to work out what makes good bit of tin. OK maybe not this. Anyway genuine rubbish tune article.

This started off as a bit of trivia that sounded good and I've tried recording myself knocking around with it. That chromatic run I do was just me covering up an error - make it look intentional! I fluffed that C chord badly and the following B flat chord was completely unplanned but worked well and took it nicely out of its key just before returning home. Weirdest thing is that the diatonic C chord sounds more out of place than the non diatonic B flat and my challenge is to link that C chord in more sweetly. The sound is terrible and one day I will get a proper mike, but I feel if I can tighten up the composition, the sound quality and the playing it's quite a decent thing I've got going here. Sort of Spanish and passionate.

Another version where I nail the C chord but I follow it with something different.

No, that was good!
I've been trying to record a cover today ...but I couldn't get it right so I settled for 'ok needs work' :D

You honestly have a fantastic voice. You hit that "smartest" high note sweetly indeed, the original takes a slightly different flatter line perhaps because it's a really deadpan song but you've given it a more heartfelt feel by brightening up the melody and that works nicely. If you think it needs more work is that you think it needs changing or polishing?

Aww thanks guys 😊 I barely ever practice a song enough to truly polish it. I just get obsessed for a few days and move on :D but this is a fun one to sing.

So it turns out I actually have a mike  :D. Also worked out how to start a youtube channel while avoiding the blocks on the company laptop. So here's this stupid thing again. I need to expand it so it's a proper thing. Also need to change those bloody strings.

In terms of composition, I'm pretty happy. It's a cheesy little piece of total drama. Why not?

In terms of recording. I'm again pretty happy. It's distorting greatly, but I'm loving the distortion, although some of the dissonant note treats are being obscured.

In terms of playing. It's rubbish. I'm trying to use finger picks that I'm not used to and it's very messy but not in a way that you can easily identify bum notes. Tightening it up just makes for more identifiable bum notes. I might nail it eventually. But if anyone with talent wants to do it justice, go ahead.

Recorded this little improvisation a few weeks ago and I wasn't that impressed. But going back to it I now like it. It's what I think of as music with the mildest touch of blues. I've taken a stance against key changes which sounds radical but it isn't really. Key changes are clunks and I want a resonant meditation like a bagpipe or a hurdy gurdy. So songs with any usual song structure are out atm. I try to ensure at least one drone note (usually in the bass) when I doodle and try to gently stray away from that tonal centre and then back again. Mildly pleased with this and it is mercifully short.

I should add that I can't play like that deliberately. I'm so much more fluid when I'm just making it up as I go along.

Well I've been doing a lot of improvising over a drone today. This one came out pretty which was not what I was going for unfortunately. So it's fit for public consumption.

This one is ugly-pretty. More the thing I want but not so much for people. Enjoy.

Not having the first clue what I'm about to play makes me do things like this

Rejigged this to make it modulate between minor and major and hold off on some of those gnarly notes. I can almost play it without just bashing the chords out now too! I've got those insistent mid register drone notes coming out well but I'm also finding them a bit irritating. I'm pleased with the work I've done but I'm also growing to dislike hearing it. Ah well. Maybe there's an idea in there someone can use.

Edit: Sod it, it's best off just bashed out.
