How long has this been a thing?

I was at a festival the other week and only just noticed how much people are doing it. Now I'm noticing it everywhere. Whats that all about then?

I suspect that it is a security thing.

What the americans call fanny packs and we call bumbags are easily undone by pickpockets and you don't feel a thing ... trying that with the bag up on your chest is way harder ...
Yeah, the description of the one I bought is "Faleto Anti-thief Hidden Security Bag Underarm Shoulder Armpit Bag Holster Portable Backpack for Phone/Money/Passport Tactical Bag Multi-purpose Concealed Pack for Travel/Outdoors".
I find it very convenient, as I can get my phone, headphones, wallet, meds etc in it.

I have a nice small black leather bum bag which I used to keep photography sundries in, I always wore it bag forward as it was easier to access that way. Unfortunately while the leather outer has survived well the interior has fallen apart so it isn't so much use anymore.

Anyhow, bum bags, wear them how you like!

Women have reserved handbags for their use only so let men use whatever they want however they want please.

No to bag fascism.

I have one for festivals that I wear across my chest as it looks horrible round my waist. Unfortunately I put too much crap in it at Glastonbury so it’s broken.

Acually that is not true.
Women did not carry bags through history. They did have pockets though.

"The oldest known purse dates back more than 5000 years, and was a pouch worn by a man, Ötzi the Iceman. Men once carried coin purses."
Handbag - Wikipedia

And anyone who wants to have a bag can do so.

I call it bandolier style and have done it when travelling on foot outside of my locality. Concealed under the jacket to one side. Because they can be a useful storage thing but you look like a proper mark if you wear them at the waist.

I've been wearing them since, erm, I think early 90s. It's clearly come back to fashion! I'm a woman though. Better than handbags on nights out. I wear it across my chest

So handbags used to be a man thing then they stole that exclusively (despite your claim anyone can).
Trousers used to be a man thing and they are in the process of stealing that.
What’s next? Beards?

Next they'll be fucking off when it's you who should be doing it.

I used to have a bum bag until my wallet was nicked from it by a pickpocket in Rome, since then I have bought proper man bags with a carry strap and concealed pockets. I have three all purchased in Europe it doesn't seem to be a UK thing.
I quite like the look of "Faleto Anti-thief Hidden Security Bag Underarm Shoulder Armpit Bag Holster Portable Backpack for Phone/Money/Passport Tactical Bag Multi-purpose Concealed Pack for Travel/Outdoors". and may get one before our next holiday.

I've seen kids wearing them like that at festivals for the last two or three years. It seems a bit pointless to me. The whole point of a bumbag is that it goes round your waist, so you're not restricted with a bag over your shoulder... why not just get a shoulder bag? kids of today!

I'd imagine that proper shoulder bags are bigger? Across the chest is definitely safer. I tend to just keep my stuff spread across my body if I need to keep it hidden, but if your worried at a festival this makes more sense.

Personally I find these shoulder bags uncomfortable.
