Penalties And penalty shoot-outs

frogwoman

No amount of cajolery...
A bit soon to start talking about this, I know, but how are England doing in this regard? Have they improved at all lately? I havent been following it at all. It is always England's major weakness, but this time, have they been practicing them well enough to have a chance of getting through?

It's all about pressure. Anyone can score a penalty in the training ground but with the eyes of the earth and the nation on you topped with the apparant curse of always missing penalties won't do the players no good! If England want to win the world cup they may win every game within 120 mins!

funnily enough there was a prog about this on 5live last night, the general consensus was that (i) penalty shoot-outs are as much about mental strength as they are about technique, (ii) there isn't really a 'perfect' penalty, and (iii) practice is essential.

i started to get quite nervous at the prospect of england having to contend with one...

If we don't let Lampard take any we might be ok.

I expect Cappello will make sure there is plenty of practice, and hopefully concentrate on the psychological aspect too.

They were saying on Radio 4 this morning that seeing as we had an agreement with the South African (cannot remember their name) team we played yesterday, to stop play at any point if Capello wanted to make changes or talk to the team, then they should have had a mock penalty shoot out. Better to do it in front of a lot of people rather than the training ground.

I reckon we will be okay.

James and green both aren't bad at saving penelties and we have a fair few players who take them(or have taken them) for thier club

I certainly trust, lampard(despite missing his last two), rooney, gerrard and barry to take them and reckon out of milner, joe cole & terry we can make up the rest.

Theres a few players who i wouldn't trust(lennon, wright-phillips, carrick, a.cole spring to mind) but it doesn't look too bad on paper.

That being said these thing are impossible to predict really.

I can only think of one shootout we've won tbh, against Spain in 96 Euros? maybe 5 lost ones? and the memory of previous shootout losses has to be a problem for current players even if they weren't involved in previous shootouts

The order in which the players go is important too.

The last of the 5 penalties is the most crucial so you want the best penalty taker. The order should be:

1st penalty = 5th best penalty taker
2nd penalty = 4th best
3rd penalty = 3rd best
4th penalty = 2nd best
5th penalty = best

no beacuse then if your first two are missed your fucked.

i always reckon it should be bury the shit penalty taker in the middle somewhere rather then at the end though. So say 2nd best, worst, best, 2nd worst, third best.

Which would mean something like: Rooney, terry, lampard, gerrard, barry, for us.

I'd agree with something along these ^ lines....definitely mix it up!!

You need to put the first couple away nice and easily to settle down and hope that your keeper can save one (or they miss) - then once it comes down to sudden death you want at least a couple of decent penalty takers left to win it for you!!

I think England are statistically the worst of the major nations, with five loses (W Germany 90, Germany 96, Argentina 98, Portugal 04 and 06) to one win (Spain 96). It was worth it for this though;

Best celebration ever.

i've always thought it would be a good idea to have a shoot out after a drawn friendly, good practice and im sure a crowd would like to see a winner, especially after a drab affair that friendlies can be sometimes

I don't know how good Joe Hart is at saving pens but I read somewhere that he's actually quite useful at taking them. Whether he'll get the chance is another matter.

David Seaman was great at penalties. He just struggled a bit with long range shots; Gazza, Nayim, Ronaldinho, and best of all Lee Dixon.

Practice is the key.

There may be no pressure on the training ground, but the more you practice any skill, the better you will be able to perform it under pressure, relying on your learnt movements and not thinking about it. It's the thinking that messes you up.
