It's not that hard to work out how to set up a small mixer for a small pub gig and there's plenty of competent sound engineers who won't be expecting a £100 for such a small, one-band gig.The other thing to consider if she’s wanting to put gigs on that are beyond one bloke and a guitar type stuff - who will be operating the kit, setting it up, mixing the bands? That’s either £100 a night for a competent engineer or getting a current member of staff trained up to do it. The former ensuring things work, the latter being somewhat dependant on said staff member...
I get the impression from that OP that the venue is wanting to move forward a bit though, at which point getting someone how knows what they’re doing is needed, to protect the gear if nothing else...It's not that hard to work out how to set up a small mixer for a small pub gig and there's plenty of competent sound engineers who won't be expecting a £100 for such a small, one-band gig.
I think this statement makes it clear it's never going to be a big thing: "Budget extremely limited as the events are free."I get the impression from that OP that the venue is wanting to move forward a bit though, at which point getting someone how knows what they’re doing is needed, to protect the gear if nothing else...

I started the Albert gigs on a very small budget too and probably would never had started had everyone told me I'd have to pay out a fortune for even a basic set up.
I reckon a decent, second hand pair of powered speakers would be a good start - anything under £350 is most like going to be crap.
Loads of small pub acts are used to having no monitors and crappy mixers, and if the night starts to do well presumably more budget can be allocated to improving the PA system.
It's worth asking the acts that play there and the bar's patrons if they've got any gear they can let her use. A high quality microphone or three would make a difference, and you may be able to find someone with a spare powered speaker to use as a monitor. If she wants as much help as possible, see if you can get some pictures of the current set up including the mixer.Cheers, you've nailed it and given her some hope it will work out.
Thanks, I'll pass on the offer. It's worth asking the acts that play there and the bar's patrons if they've got any gear they can let her use. I presume they are in working order.
Thanks
sorry if I missed it but where is the place located?A friend is looking to get a PA system for bands to put on at her place. She does a weekly show with new artists. The place is probably 150 people max when in use for music. The rest of the time its a bar, cafe, food place. The music varies from indie bands to rappers to singer songwriters etc.
At the moment she has a 50w marshall amp, couple of mics and a small 4 channel mixer. As well as a baby grand piano. The bands have sometimes turned up with some bass amps etc.
She would appreciate recommendations for what she should start thinking about purchasing for the future.
Budget extremely limited as the events are free.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Its in North Londonsorry if I missed it but where is the place located?
