One Night in Glasgow

I have three days in Glasgow next week after visiting my aunt in edinburgh. Aunty is 96 and in a home in Joppa.

My three days probably equal the time crustychick had. Well in truth only the city is the same as I will have my 91 year old mum with me, want to go and see some rennie Macintosh stuff, I've never been to Glasgow

get yourself on a tour around the Art School then, it's the best CRM building to see and indeed one of the finest buildings in the country.

You could also check out the House For an Art Lover

Thanks for those, thats great. The BBC had a programme last night in the Imagine series on the glasgow artists.

imagine... explores the story of a group of artists and curators who stormed the international art world and turned their home city of Glasgow into a global capital for contemporary art. Amongst the artists Alan Yentob encounters are 2011 Turner Prize-winner Martin Boyce, as well as previous winners Douglas Gordon,...

probably not what I will be seeing this time, but was a great backgroud for me:)

Do the Art School Tour. You need to book it in advance but it is amazing. There are some stairs at various points, no lifts due to the historic nature.

looks like that's about the more recent bunch of Glasgow artists but there was something similar a hundred years before - everyone's heard of Mackintosh but there were also a bunch of painters who were prominent at the time (you can see some of their stuff in the Kelvingrove museum). Glasgow's had a long history of visual arts which is one of the many reasons why it's so superior to Edinburgh which is really just bankers and English people.

If you're interested in architecture you should also look up Alexander Thomson and Gillespie Kidd & Coia.

There was a 3 part series about art nouveau earlier in the year and amongst a lot of stuff it showed Macintosh's wifes work, I loved the series and am looking forward to seeing it.

Thanks for links, will have a look later

I was at The School Of Art in June this year and there a few folk getting on the lift but I don't know if it went to all floors. The website says there is disabled access which requires advance booking. I also love Margaret Macdonalds work too and there is plenty to sigh at in Kelvingrove Gallery. The Mackintosh replica house is sadly closed at the moment but worth going to if you get the chance again.
