Alizée - Gourmandises

It's been the soundtrack to my summer. Utterly charming French chanson influenced pop.

Hearing this makes you realise how utterly dunderheaded British pop has become. Laurent Boutonnat, the guy behind this project, knows exactly how to create pop that deliberately trades on the fact that it is pop precisely to create a music of enchantment, where the supposedly transient nature of the music touches something deep inside. Despite the end of influence of the church, erotic attraction is still ignored by the philosophers, having to make do at best with the worst sort of unwittingly self-parodying postmodernism. Yet the libido suffuses our lives, our individual consciousness at such a deep level

*looks nervously around for dub*

erm... anyway, it's got the most annoyingly catchy tunes on it ever...

Actually the production on this CD is fantastic (in the archaic sense too)... Boutonnat has created a mouthwatering, "Amants De Pont Neuf" firework display style display of stratospherically soaring strings, acid bass, tribal, and (hidden in the mix) some strange, gritty sounds that add a little edge. Minor complaints: the melodic lines can be a little banal if you sing them on their own (but god they are infuriatingly catchy), and the more unusual samples are a little lost in the mix.

But it is the Voice that makes this CD.

Alizée has the voice of a naughty angel.

I think of Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance

- Alizée is so far distant from this -

And realise just how huge is the span of female sexuality

I get a lump in my throat I couldn't even begin to explain

But Alizée - she communicates fire by being cool. A typically French trick.

Don't be downloading this from dodgy p2p sites either - apart from the fact that the megabucks production demands the best possible sound quality, the poor girl looks like she hasn't had a decent meal in weeks... go on... you know it makes sense...

;)

nicky blackmarket comp. not as good as i remember, although twisted individual is *nice*.
marilyn manson - antichrist superstar - forgotten how fine this record is.
life of agony - river runs great: great tunes, amazing voice, shite skits in between tracks.

Mogwai's "Happy Songs for Happy People" and Ruud Awakening FM on the radio. Which isn't strictly on the CD player, but it's what I've been listening to. Verrry nice breakbeat station, worth a listen...
