Olympics closing ceremony on TV now.

Nonsense, Beckham has been famous across the world since he was playing for Manchester United. You are confusing 'the world' with 'the United States of America'

Leona Lewis won a reality TV show - and then went to number one across the world with her debut album

I don't think a pillar box would have been suitable transport into the stadium tbh

Exactly!

I can't agree with you about Beckham - he was certainly very, very well known round the world a long time before he went to the states. He is probably the most recognised footballer in the world and the most recognised British sportsman. He was the obvious choice

More of a celeb than a sportsman these days.
Part of a naff national team too.

Hasn't got a lot to do with Olympic sport, though?

David Beckham plays in a sport in which we don't even compete, and is not even based in Britain. He only became famous around the world when he started playing in the States. That film, Bend It Like Beckham, was even released under a different name because of that :)

Leona Lewis won a reality tv show.

Why red buses and not red post boxes? It just seemed odd, is all, to parade a double decker bus.

Vroom! Vroom!

I agree with you - I don't like the man but he is still an internationally recognised sportsman and the obvious choice for an international audience

Lewis hamilton is far more fitting but i guess with GB putting a football team at next olympics , then beckham is obvious choice:)

I hope to hell that there is no GB football team at the 2012 olympics!

Agree that DB is a global sporting icon, biggest shirt seller ever possibly? especially in south east asia, he's idolised there. Personally i'd rather have seen a great GB olympian there from previous years, Mary Peters possibly? Think it was twisted who said that since she won gold she had done a hell of a lot for sport in NI. Failing that, someone like Steve Redgrave, possibly GB's greatest olympian ever?

Feel sorry for the poor sods who won nothing they'll prob be ignored in the rush to turn the medal winners into "celebs"

I'm sure Kaplonska called Shanaze but she either didn't hear her or ignored her

The police also didn't want to let Nicole Cooke go and join her team-mates for a photo-shoot (she obviously flew back earlier than them) but they relented :D

but that would only have spoken to people in this country. everyone else in the world would have been going 'who the bloody hell's that?' as Redgrave popped up to row the bus away

Here's the love of your life Twisted

She's not really, she's just a well cool lass and a bit geeky with it...she's a personality that many of them lack.
The 3 blondes in a boat are growing on me but have no idea what they did in the Olympics besides sailing somewhere and arriving before the others did, and looking good whilst doing it no doubt.

They did it last year as well ;) Well two of them did anyway :D

True, but i had no idea who the Chinese althletes were carrying the flame in the opening ceremony until the presenters explained.

To be fair though, even given their insane medal count, how many Chinese athletes could you name? Suspect this will change over the coming years.

Apparently he's gotten very fat since he stopped rowing, hard habit to break eating 6000 calories a day i guess.

Not as chubby as Pinsent though, did you see him on the coverage?!

Because of this thread I have downloaded it. I want to see why everyone was watching it with toes curled.

so you think getting a guy who's been succesful for little more than a year, in a sport which isn't in the olympics and probably isn't particularly well known in either america, china or countless other countries that don't pay attention to F1, would have been more fitting than the most famous sportsman london (and the uk) has ever produced, who don't forget is also a UNICEF goodwill ambasador, and plays a sport GB is hoping to enter a team for in the olympics for the first time ever? you're weird

I haven't yet found a video of the 8 minute London showcase, but it seems a bit odd that one of the main British icons is a brand new London bus (not even a routemaster!), a celebrity footballer (when Team GB doesn't even put up a football team), a reality tv popstar, and an ancient (but not particularly mainstream) rocker. Oh, and not to mention the bumbling (but funny) Mayor of London. Is that really the best they could do?

The Mayor of Vancouver visited as well. It makes sense, since Vancouver has the 2010 Winter Olympics. Why wouldn't the Mayor of London attend?

Who would you have sent: Babyshambles and Amy Winehouse?
