Elaine Thompson-Herah, the two-time Olympic champion in the 100m and 200m, will miss the Paris Olympics with an Achilles injury.

She won gold in the 100m and 200m in Rio in 2016 and defended her titles in Tokyo five years later.

Elaine Thompson-Herah also won a fifth Olympic gold in Japan as part of the Jamaican 4x100m relay team.

Sha'Carri Richardson made her way through to the 100m semi-final while jogging most of her heat, while lightly-raced living legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and fellow veteran
Marie Josée Ta Lou-Smith both put in solid times. Daryll Neita appears to be quietly timing her run to peak form very well.

Richardson looks to be the one to beat at the moment.

Marie Josée Ta Lou-Smith is through to tonight's final. However, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has reprotedly withdrawn at the semi-final stage.

Think DAS let out a bit of a swear crossing the line in 5th, there. I'm not expert, but didn't look comfortable through the whole race :(

Julien Alfred looked to have plenty in reserve winning her semi-final in 10.84, ahead of Sha'Carri Richardson (10.89), who also had a little in reserve, but looked slightly nervous prior to the start.

Daryll Neita again looked solid again coming second to Tia Clayton, whose raw fearlessness means that she is likely to be in contention for a place on the podium later.

No explanation has yet been given for the non-appearance of living legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in her semi-final.

One wonders if any of the finalists will take the advice of a Belgian with a PhD in Civil Engineering / Building Physics, who is Professor of Mechanical Engineering (Aerodynamics) at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, part-time Professor of Civil Engineering (Building Physics) at KU Leuven in Belgium, Editor of the peer-reviewed journal Building & Environment, Associate Editor of the journal Sports Engineering and Associate Editor of the journal Discovery Applied Sciences, a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Wind Engineering & Industrial Aerodynamics, Building Simulation, the International Journal of Ventilation and the journal Advances in Wind Engineering, and who has published 240 papers in international peer-reviewed journals:

Olympic athletes competing in 100m could wear HAIR CAPS, experts say

Yeah, can’t fault the runners.

What is this shit with them all coming out of the building sequentially like on Gladiators, though?
Came in a while back. The relays teams tend to go in for it a bit more, often doing some brief routine/poses. Think they find it a bit awkward for the individual races, though.

All part o' the show, innit ;)

Oh, bloody hell, they're also doing it for the 1500m in the men's decathlon! Ok, hadn't realised/had forgotten they do it for them too..! :D

Should be able to press the red button to cut out the arsing about.

Congratulations to Julien Alfred on her comprehensive and historic 100m victory - hopefully it will lift the spirits of her Hurricane Beryl-hit compatriots.

Well, house, family, dog and goat all got washed away in the hurricane, but at least Julien won her running race…

That's a real shame for everyone competing - they'll want to beat the best which she definitely counts among.

I hope she's OK, it must be devastating to have to pull out

On a similar but not so similar theme, heard about this on a podcast earlier

Nigerian officials have told the BBC they are trying to work out how Favour Ofili’s name was left off the entry list for the women’s 100m at Paris 2024.

The 21-year-old sprinter was expecting to compete in three events at her first Olympics: the 100m, 200m and women’s 4x100m relay.

But Ofili was told that she had not been registered for the 100m before Friday’s
heats.
In something involving as many people and orgs as the Olympics, something like this is almost bound to happen, but still brutal when it does.

I have maximum respect for what he’s achieved but I do find him a tad annoying, same as Sha’Carri Richardson.

The Men's 100m final looks to be wide open ... but Fred Kerley and Kishane Thompson look like they really want to end up on the podium.
