Olympic Track & Field - aka Athletics thread

From the BBC Feed

"1451: I'm hearing news that Britain have appealed against their disqualification from the men's 4x100m semis earlier. Is that a joke?"

Much as I'd like to see the GB Team go through unless Pickering was somehow put of or obstructed I don't think they have grounds. Still, if you don't try you'll never know!!

eta - just updated

"1455 Sanity returns. Britain decide not to appeal against their disqualification from the men's 4x100m after reviewing footage."

I think the Team usually appeal, as a matter of course. Chances are everyone else will be doing the same. Nothing will come of it, I shouldnt think.

Only 3 cleansweeps so far this Track and Fields meet?
400m men, 100m women and Im missing another American mens cleapsweep...?

Agree with that^^^

Had a laugh up my sleeve at this piece from CNN! Yeah, Yeah I know we fucked up too! But still... :D That photo is jokes!

Relay disasters hit U.S. Olympic track team

The under-performing United States track and field team suffered further humiliation on Thursday as both their sprint relay squads exited the Olympics after blunders on the final changeovers.

The men were the first to suffer disappointment when world 100 meters champion Tyson Gay did not receive the baton from Darvis Patton as he set off for the final leg.

Gay will leave Beijing not just empty-handed, but without even running in a final.

"I take full blame for it," Gay told the Associated Press.

"I kind of feel I let them down."

There was more woe to follow in the women's heats when the baton was dropped as it moved from Torri Edwards to Lauryn Williams on the final leg.

Williams in desperation ran back to pick up the baton, but it was an impossible task as she came in last.

To rub salt into the wound, the all-conquering Jamaican squads won both their heats in the men's and women's races and look set to claim two more golds.

*feels teeny twinge of empathy for Tyson Gay who is a gentleman*

more honest than some of the GB athletes excuses!

About Martin Rooney he would have run way inside his personal best to get an outside chance of getting a bronze medal considering some of the top quality runners he was up against (e.g. David Neville, Chris Brown) inthe one lap sprint. I concur that his interview was honest, just like Mo's Farah's post race interview in the 5,000m semi-final yesterday. Especially when he said that the went off too fast in the first 200m. But there's potential for the Croydon youngster to improve his development in the race.

Dayron Robles - what a technically & silky smoothed hurdler that guy is! Great win in the 110m hurdles

Kelly Sotherton ran the second leg of GB's womens 4x400 relay heat! GB qualify easily!*

*eta, well after a little burst after Ohuruogo had to put in a bit of a burst after the German runner nearly sneaked up on her :)

They must have made that decision a while back- dont you have to give notice of the 6 athletes you intend to enter?

Its on multi screen, I think. They have reached the running stage. The Brit in second place has a 19 second handicap to take into the race.

I just caught the end of the run and the medal places!

Men's 4x400 heats on now. US cruised it, but looks like Belgium pipped the Australians. Commenators warning that GB will have to go some to make the final!
