I notice there seems to a growing genre of old blokes on a vigilante trip films which feel like retirement home versions of Get Carter/Point Blank lone crim flicks!

They're quite fun, if not slighty morally iffy!!!!!

...and unlike the two official Grindhouse films Planet Terror and Death Proof, which look like no 70s/80s exploitation film I've ever seen, this spin-off really looks and sounds like some grubby exploitation film from the 80s.

I heard the director talking about it on the radio- He had a ver, very plumby counties accent. The word chavsploitation comes to mind.

Oh, I really liked the Dollar westerns when I was growing up, read all the books and stuff, taped the films on cassette tape. I don't think I cared for his films much beyond that.
That chair thing did ruin my childhood a little bit.

I didn't manage to sit all the way through Death Proof and I didn't even have the long version, I was watching the double feature edit. Planet Terror was good enough fun for what it is.

Same here, my tolerance for Eastwood goes not much further than the Spaghetti westerns and a small hand full of films he starred in in the 70s. I find him wildly overrated as a director. Much of it is reactionary, sentimental bullshit.

In Eastwood's case one of the reasons I don't like his films is because they have a conservative, paternalistic, macho outlook. His sensibility is the opposite to my own and its all over his work. So him being an outspoken Republican and a film-maker are intermingled for me. David Lynch also is a Republican, but his politics don't make their way into his work and therefore I don't have a problem with loving his films.
