We watched 9th Company at the weekend and I'd heartily recommend it.
It's a Russian version of Full Metal Jacket and follows a platoon of Soviet soldiers through boot camp and into Afghanistan.
The Longest Day is on at 4.30pm. Brilliant film, but far too long for my current short attention span.
I just read your post again and deleted all my suggestions as they weren't old, I'll paste them anyway as you may wnat to check them out
Check out a film called The Cockleshell Heroes, it's a much overlooked film IMO. True story. No planes but um... there's canoes O_O
The Cockleshell Heroes
During WW2, German ships are "safely" docked upriver at Bordeaux, but the British send a team of kayakers to attack them.

here's my original response:
Great film. I've insisted on having it on in the background whilst I'm cooking and doing a bit of work.
Mrs Spy says she's going to the gym.
It's also a bit of a case of "spot the star" whilst watching
Hard disk loaded up with a shit load of films. I'd say I managed to find 85% of the suggestions on this thread!
Many Thanks Everyone.
It could've done without John Wayne though. I can't take a film seriously if he's in it.
"First Light", a book written by Jeffery Wellum and video about the impact that flying a Spitfire in the Battle of Britain at the age of 18 had on him. An excellent book and film.
Amazon has the tv video but I got mine a different way.got a link to the TV adaptation?
Good film was looking for the scene in the village with the young jihadi for the best battle scene thread, the bit where they touch down in afganistan for the first time is class tooWe watched 9th Company at the weekend and I'd heartily recommend it.
It's a Russian version of Full Metal Jacket and follows a platoon of Soviet soldiers through boot camp and into Afghanistan. The main engagement is based on real events and has some of the most brutal battle scenes I've seen in war films.
Really well filmed and acted but definitely not a Sunday afternoon "gentle" film.
Proper hard-core war and apparently one of the most popular Russian films ever made.
Available on Lovefilm Instant.
No Highway; Jimmy Stewart as a surprisingly believable British scientist. From a novel by Neville Shute forecasting metal fatigue well before the Comet disasters.
