Old Aviation and War Films

We watched 9th Company at the weekend and I'd heartily recommend it.

It's a Russian version of Full Metal Jacket and follows a platoon of Soviet soldiers through boot camp and into Afghanistan. The main engagement is based on real events and has some of the most brutal battle scenes I've seen in war films.

Really well filmed and acted but definitely not a Sunday afternoon "gentle" film.

Proper hard-core war and apparently one of the most popular Russian films ever made.

Available on Lovefilm Instant.

The War Lover - I watched this last night. Steve McQueen - ace pilot who likes bombing and bombing and bombing, but a selfish twat on the ground has a feud with his co-pilot Robert Wagner, a bell-end in his own way, over a saucy lady. Snappy dialogue, a couple of racey scenes, good use of archive footage and Michael Crawford doing a terrible american accent.

Some others, dunno if they've been mentioned.

Transit
The Winter War
The Dawns Here Are Quiet
Ballad Of A Soldier
Two Men Went To War

Talvisota is great.

If Finnish flicks are your thing, try also Tuntematon Sotilas (The Unknown Soldier) in either 1955 or 1985 version; Framom Främsta Linjen (Behind Enemy Lines); Rukajärven Tie (Ambush); or Tali-Ihantala 1944. They'll all about the Winter War or the Continuation War. Not seen any covering the Lapland War though.

I keep meaning to watch Taistelu Näsilinnasta 1918 (The Battle of Näsilinna) and Raja 1918 (The Border), which are both about the Civil War.

The Longest Day is on at 4.30pm. Brilliant film, but far too long for my current short attention span.

1914 All Out (a drama I've not seen, is also currently showing on ITV3).

Meanwhile, on other channels, there's loads of Christmas films

I just read your post again and deleted all my suggestions as they weren't old, I'll paste them anyway as you may wnat to check them out :D

Check out a film called The Cockleshell Heroes, it's a much overlooked film IMO. True story. No planes but um... there's canoes O_O

The Cockleshell Heroes
During WW2, German ships are "safely" docked upriver at Bordeaux, but the British send a team of kayakers to attack them.

here's my original response:

Much overlooked and also inaccurate in parts.

Is there Cameronism in this :hmm:

"First Light", a book written by Jeffery Wellum and video about the impact that flying a Spitfire in the Battle of Britain at the age of 18 had on him. An excellent book and film.

Two good films about barnstorming which take place in the 20s and 30s are The Great Waldo Pepper from 1975 with Robert Redford and The Tarnished Angels from 1957 with Rock Hudson. Both are about WWI pilots who are reduced to stunt flying after the war.

And of course there are the Peanuts films, most of which include Red Baron sequences with Snoopy !

Good film was looking for the scene in the village with the young jihadi for the best battle scene thread, the bit where they touch down in afganistan for the first time is class too

No Highway; Jimmy Stewart as a surprisingly believable British scientist. From a novel by Neville Shute forecasting metal fatigue well before the Comet disasters.

Bump - I never knew this made it into film! I am rereading all the shutes at the minute and this one stands out as being filmworthy. I might start a shute thread actually, some interesting stuff in there. And some that needs to be read bearing in mind attitudes prevelant when it was written
