Old Aviation and War Films

Who Dares Wins is a piece of disgusting filth, btw

It's even worse than the Wild Geese, IIRC. Alleging that CND were a front for far-left terrorism is pretty fucking low, alright.

The OP might want to check out Appointment in London, aka Raiders in the Sky, or something like that. Dirk Bogarde as a Bomber Commad officer. He can only get to London by going via Berlin. Not bad for what it is.

Even better (but not on youtube anymore, I checked) is Alec Guiness, in The Malta Story. Does exactly what it says on the tin - Obi Wan is an RAF reconnaissance pilot flying out of Malta during the siege.

Cobblers, it's a story, ffs! :D

And it wasn't alleging that all CND were a front for terrorism, just that particular cell, and nobody would seriously doubt that such elements could have existed somehow somewhere. I'm not saying it's history but it'll only get up the nose of the most sensitive agenda merchants, surely?

We'll have nazi's complaining about Marathon Man next!

Good call on Malta Story though.

Hell in the Pacific, I love that film plus you get to see Lee Marvin piss on Toshiro Mifune!

Yes, dear CND peaceniks are just like the Nazis. You so crazy Spymaster.

One I watched recently: The Long and the Short and the Tall. Not much actual combat, but a rising tension, and a lot of stuff about the ethics of war.

Get out. Wild Geese is AMAZING.

The secret with War films, after considerable experience and numerous all day Sunday sessions, is to avoid the good ones.

Once you've watched Dirty Dozen, The Eagles one with Richard Burton (always get them confused), Bridges Too Far and Over the River Kwai...you get such a taste for them, yet all subsequent films will then seem to be cheap pastiches of the 'Greats' (see: Kellys Heroes), and you're forever on a downward spiral where films like Inglorious Bastards (the original with whatisface singer guy) just end up being a disappointment.

The true beauty can be found by watching the shite ones first - then you see the realness of the genre with guys only 1 generation from the conflict in a mad rush to release anything.

Thankfully he doesn't get many lines and mostly pouts around looking broody :D

Would have thought Madsen had paid off his mortgage by now, though.

It'll drive any war film purist round the bend, the uniforms, vehicles, planes etc., are are a total mish-mash and the pop-music soundtrack would do anyone's head in. Still thought it was good fun though and Madsen's character is ace.

Hey new guy: I know we're all nervous, what with us being minutes away from jumping out of this plane into enemy-occupied territory in extremely hostile circumstances, but I think what will help us all relax a little bit is if you show us a picture of your sweetheart who you plan on marrying when you get your home leave next month.

A more recent film which he might enjoy is Dark Blue World, a Czech movie about their Battle of Britain pilots.

I was talking to someone at the Battle of Britain museum in Hawkringe who was telling me they borrowed their Spitfires, rather than CGI or the dubious models of the 1968 Battle of Britain movie. The dogfights and filming are really well done.

Mainly a Czech cast but some of it is in English and has Tara Fitzgerald and Charles Dance in it.

...the dubious models of the 1968 Battle of Britain movie...
Come on, for sure not every plane on screen is 100% historically accurate, but they pulled together the most extensive collection of flying machines (and not quite flying machines) and orchestrated some of the most thrilling aerial scenes ever seen in ways which very closely approximated the real BOB.

My favorite film.

Must've seen it 50+ times over the years. Now I look for other things rather than the storyline, like how many times they use the same shot in the battle scenes (the same shot of the HE 111 crashing into the sea is used 4 times), and the plastic 1960's doorbell on the cottage is a nice goof.
i'm always on the look out for the scarves they wear. ooh look! michael caine is wearing a yellow paisley!

Not a war film but Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines needs a mention.

Fuck aeroplanes though, films about horses are where it's at - Your dad needs to be watching National Velvet.

Have only skimmed this thread

Have Flight of the Phoenix, Bataan, Twelve O'Clock High, Went the Day Well, Battle of Midway been mentioned?

There were a few scrappy model shots but Yes I'll concede that, I was being a bit harsh as I saw Battle of Britain recently for the first time as an adult and was surprised how good it was, visually and inits historical details. It must be the first war film to acknowledge the important role of non-British pilots.

The Cruel Sea - Fine performances by Hawkins & Sinden, one of my favourite movies of all time.
