North Norfolk.

I have noticed some tourist dislike in other norfolk threads, please, I only plan to visit for a weekend.

Just north of Great Yarmouth is pretty good. Buses can be infrequent and expensive. Still, the Broads are local, lots of sandy beaches, seal-spotting (year round) at Horsey Gap, coastal walking, some decent pubs. Big sky country (or the closest I've seen to it in the UK...)

where would you recommend for a mini break.

must be good for beaches, walks, food and drinks and on a bus route.

a castle might be nice too.

thanks!
The coastal hopper is a decent service so I’d stay somewhere on that route:

Wells is a nice seaside town; Blakeney a bit posh; further east more rural (eg Salthouse/Cley) then you get to Sheringham which is a bit more tacky seaside.

My Mum lives up that way so ask me if you’ve got any other questions.

Castle Rising is a castle of sorts, theres Holkham Hall which might be an alternative.
Hunstanton is ok but not much to the town. Walk up the beach past the cliffs to Old Hunstanton cafe.
Brancaster is good for the walk and the fish stall.
Wells is posh but not too snobby, very busy in season the beach is nice, a long walk from the town but sometimes a little train runs, the walk round the woods near the beach is nice, be careful of the currents and tide if swimming.
Sheringham is tacky but the bakers there sell Norfolk cake which is unusual.

Castles? It’s not Scotland. Holkham Hall is supposed to be good, I think you can pay to go in and look round all the olde worlde stuff. There’s also a nice beach there and some nice pine woods. Cley, Blakeney, Brancaster, Cromer, Sherringham are all nice. The first three are a bit more out in the wilds which is good for walks and beaches. Titchwell is an amazing RSPB reserve with lovely walk out to the sea. Your main issue is going to be transport. The Coasthopper bus goes all along the coast but I think it’s every 2 hours so if you miss one it’s a long wait for the next one, and if you’re going via the train to Kings Lynn or Norwich it’s a long journey.

If North Norfolk and no car then I'd definitely go for Cromer as a base. It's enough of a proper town to have more to eat than crab - if you like crab it's great, I don't- for example there is a great Thai restaurant there.

Once there the places to head for include Blakeney - seals! at the right time of year - Wells next the sea and Holt, which is inland but lovely. North Norfolk can be a bit North London on sea but the sea, landscape and skies can be beautiful.

holkham sounds good, heard people mention it.

looking to eat fresh seafood and stay in a little cottage or hut. (air bnb)

anyone done similar?

I've booked a little place in Holt, it is close to a steam railway (to sheringham) and there is a castle type building nearby, plus a bike ride away from Blakeney

can't wait!
Good fishmongers in Holt (Cromer crab etc) if that’s your bag. Old Town is an interesting menswear shop. Larners is an extremely good deli with an extraordinary wine department but nose-bleedingly expensive (and owned by the family of the local Tory MP ).

Decent fish and chips in Sheringham and excellent ice cream (Ronaldo’s).

actually am looking forward to trying as much fresh seafood as poss.

Canal boating is fun. Really easy too. You don’t need to be a sailor and you can end up in some really weird isolated Wickerman type villages.
Not many canals in North Norfolk!

already been told about this . one of the places we will be checking out. hope it's open end of sept.
Other good food places - Gunton Arms (venison, pricey); Victoria Inn Holkham; Wiveton Hall Cafe; Socius Burnham Market.

I did go on a boating holiday with some pals in the Norfolk Broads. Longish boat, propellor driven. Really easy to use. i just assumed it was called a canal boat. Sailor i am not.
Yeah the Broads are in south Norfolk :)
