New Crossrail / Elizabeth line tube map released

Still not been on it, simply because I haven't wanted to go between two places that are on it, but I'll pass it off as some sort of republican protest all the same.

An accident of history, unfortunately. Most stations were built before a standard loading gauge had been agreed, so platforms were all built low, to accomodate the wide variety of train that might call there. And now, 100 years down the line (pun intended) all mainline stations still have to be sized to take any possible train, including freight. So even the refurbed Liz line stations still have the "historic" platform height. True level access, as seen at some tube stations and the central Liz line stations is only possible when the trains and stations are designed to the same standard, and you can guarantee that no other train types will call there.

So Abbey Wood has level access, because the Liz platforms only see Liz trains. Whereas Acton still has a big step because they have to share with GWR trains.
Interesting I would think Maidenhead hasn’t got the space for a dedicated Crossrail platform then. Pity it couldn’t be done but inevitable given the varying ages of rail infrastructure

Overground has some I think, certainly on the rebuilt bit from Shoreditch up to Dalston. Some of the other overground ones have ‘humps’ to give level access just for part of the train.

Only a couple of years behind the rest of the world, I finally got to try the Elizabeth Line today.

Blown away! What a tube line this is…Beautiful trains and stations - Air con which works like a fridge and Wi-Fi which lets you post pics to U75 right from your train seat. What’s not to love?

Anyone with a weak bladder?
Ah, yeah no toilets onboard. But it’s a frequent service so not the end of the world to hop off and use facilities at a station.

The only other way I could fault it, if I were trying to, is Oyster not being accepted beyond West Drayton. It didn’t bother me as I had a one day travel card in my pocket, but I can see that Oyster users might find it a hassle to have to buy a different ticket.

I would have thought they could find a way to make oyster work all the way out to reading and just charge the appropriate fare and fix the admin behind the scenes.

It's an amazing thing, but as an early 50's male with a prostate, if I were heading from Essex to Heathrow the idea that I would need to nip off with mine and my family's luggage half way so I could have slash is a bit shit. Frau Bahn's had two kids, many women can sympathise, as I'm sure many men can too. The full journey from Shenfield to Reading is over an hour, they chose not to put bogs on the trains. Bang out of order.

When I travelled it's length we had to change at Paddington. Can you go straight through now?
Why would you want to?

I work in Reading - whenever someone here has to go to London, we get the GWR fast train to Paddington and get on the Lizard line there, if that's the best way to wherever we are going, which it normally isn't (head office is round the corner from Baker St). I have done Paddington to Liverpool St.

There are bins...

It's still rubbish for getting to LHR imo. Have done a few runs recently and the Lizard Line wasn't even suggested by Citymapper. They are far too infrequent.

Yeah, it's slow and tedious. It's only marginally better than getting the Piccadilly line.

Personally I think the ideal scenario is to incorporate the Heathrow Express into the system, and run frequent express trains non-stop between Heathrow and Paddington which also continue into central London. Even if you have to get off at Paddington from a local calling service, it's a lot less of a ball ache than transiting between the Elizabeth Line and the Heathrow Express on the main concourse (bags and all).

I think it’s great getting to and from Heathrow. I guess it depends on where you live but being able to get from Stratford to Heathrow on one train in less than 50 minutes seems pretty good to me.

Romford and Ilford have bogs on the Westbound platform right in the middle of the train. Don't know about the other branches. The kids always swear blind they don't need a wee before we leave the house but desperately need a piss the moment the train starts moving.

from where? from central London it's definitely a lot quicker and easier. they're about every 10 minutes I think. I know someone who works at Heathrow and they use it every day. (apart from today when there are engineering works!) and I have been using it every day to travel across London since it opened, sooo much better than the tube.

From Brixton. The line as a whole is great, but frequency to LHR is poor, particularly as they alternate going to T5 with going to the other terminals. In practice this means it's every 30 mins.

yeah, looks like 2 per hour to T5 but 6 per hour to T2 and 3.

"The airport overall will receive six Elizabeth trains per hour all day. All Heathrow trains stop at Terminal 2&3, with four per hour continuing to Terminal 4, and two per hour continuing to Terminal 5."

It wasn’t designed to help people in Brixton. It was designed to help people from east of London get to the west of London (and vice versa) faster than before. It also had the benefit of helping people get to and from the financial district quicker as well as to Heathrow. The main drawback seems to be that at the outer edges, you are better getting the mainline trains ie Shenfield to Liv St/Stratford is much quicker by mainline train and same for Reading to Paddington which defeats the purpose of it being so far out (although presumably just replaced the old trains that ran that route). If they could speed up those parts of the journey it would be better.

And I believe the trains from T2/3 are free so although the Elizabeth line might not take you to your terminal if you don’t time it right, I don’t think it is that difficult or long to get to the right one.

We used it to get to Heathrow a couple of weeks ago.

Coming from Leicester, into St Pancras. One stop to Faringdon. Lunch. Crossrail to Heathrow.

So much better than an hour on the Piccadilly line.
