My “Eureka” moment. A cure for cancer.

Perhaps we should review the literature of drugs that don't exist and why they will be banned:D

TEVROMATIN:
PROFILE: Chemotherapy adjuvant specifically designed for glioblastomas of neuronal origin. By mimicking natural neural differentiation factors, it causes these tumors to regress from resilient high-grade neuroblasts towards more typical neurons, making them easy targets for stronger chemotherapeutic agents.
BANNED BECAUSE: During differentiation process, malignant nerve cells form connections to healthy nerve cells and to each other. As a result, tumor forms a functioning neural network effectively “telepathically” connected to healthy brain. Patients report feelings of overwhelming guilt as tumor accesses patient’s memories and emotions and realizes its role as a parasitic cancer, followed by its utter terror as it realizes it is about to be killed. Many patients refuse to continue with chemotherapy regimen; those who continue make a complete physical recovery but are psychologically scarred for life as they experience every moment of the tumor’s death as if it were their own.

The best way to "cure" cancer is not to get it in the first place. This would do away with all the problems of drug side effects, the trauma of treatment, and the problem/riskss associated with having to undergo surgery.

(serious bit: A former student of mine was working on the delivery of anti-cancer drugs by delivering them to the site of the tumour using micro-robots. Last time I spoke to her she was studying this at MIT. I'm not sure how far along she was with the project but she felt that there was a good probability of it working, if she could only find out how to make the micro-delivery system affordable and reliable. Two somewhat difficult to solve issues.)

That sounds a bit like my "garden weeding robot" idea that doubtless has already been built by someone.

It's not as bad as the student who had spent two years researching some type of "glue" to stop screws coming out of an item during the manufacturing process. The look on her face when I said "loctite threadlocker". Her jaw dropped to the floor, and I realised that I had just undermined two years of her research. Two years working towards a PhD into something that already existed, and was commonly available.

I've just invented Faster Than Light Travel. no really. You can thank me yesterday.

Summary:

The ability for humans to travel at superluminal speeds can be gained with a mechanism that necesarily violates General Relativity. An engine comprised of technology capable of this, if developped and safely deployed, will lead to FTL travel being a reality.

This science stuff is easy.

I hereby award you the 2013/14 Nobel peace prize.

thats impossible not to laugh at

From what I've seen of him previously, he seems pretty impervious to it, though I agree in principle
Are you suggesting that the basis of whether or not you should mock someone's mental illness is the extent to which they seem to be able to withstand your mockery?

I'm suggesting I have no idea if he's ill or not, but as mocking his ideas doesn't bother him, AFAICS, it's probably immaterial in thus instance. If we knew his ideas were because he's mentally ill, I'd be sure we shouldn't mock. As we don't know anything of the sort, but mocking doesn't seem to bother him, I'm not sure there's any harm.

He reminds me of this guy and his works. A schizophrenic programmer who wrong an entire operating system from scratch (no mean feat!!).

edit: I don't intend any offence by that, Peter. Just an observation :)

hes definitely not the full shilling, air is getting in somewhere. On the one hand he fearlessly leaps out with these spectaculars that i find seriously impressive . Like seriously, he does not do things by halves. Hes a fucking legend . I am always impressed by Peter Dow.
On the flip side though your aware that he faces nothing but ridicule, hostility and apparently loneliness, and thats not good for the soul. But he seems a remarkably resilient character . If you were ever stranded in the north pole youd want him there as someone who can keep going no matter what the scale of the adversity. At the same time when rescuers arrive youd want to fucking leave him there.

my feelings are mixed.

yes, mine too. His ongoing obsession with Condoleeza Rice, of all people, does make me smile. You do think 'how's he going to work her into this one?', but he always finds a way.

I didnt know about that until this thread, and thats odd too, because i remember arguing with him back during the Libyan thing and he was totally pro kill gadaffi...actually he had an entire military strategy mapped out as i recall. I couldnt for the life of me understand why a self proclaimed uber republican socialist who was so vehemently anti united kingdom was cheering on the Queens armed forces and demanding the head of the Brother leader on a plate . Then when the big compound was looted what turned up only a scrap book dedicated to Condoleeza Rice.

i think ive definitely figured out why Peter hated him so much .
