Sounds to me like these kids and their teachers have just been watching too many Japanese and other Asian horror films, where this sort of ghostly apperition business seems to be a common narrative device. Really don't think there's anything particularly relevant about the Malaysian aspect
There's a huge tradition of Malaysian ghost stories to draw on, they don't need Japanese or other Asian sources.

I'm sure there are. It seems a common theme in many Asian horror films I've seen, far more of which have been Japanese than Malaysian.

I was trying to suggest that the phenomonon is not specifically Malaysian, but rather can be found in various forms across many (not only Asian) cultures.
