Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman to premiere at New York film festival

I'm not sure the message of The Irishman is wouldn't you want to be him lads. In the end, it's surely about how self destructive such a life is?
It's also about how Jimmy Hoffa was a saint and martyr. Watching Hoffa in action, I was reminded of Thomas Sankara's line about how the soldier with no political education is a criminal in waiting.

But how he got to be on his own in the nursing home, why his family have walked away and why his friends are all dead, and how he doesn't recognise his role any of this is one of the main story arcs isn't it?
Yes it is. And his inability to see this and bewilderment at his eventual fate are all there, although that makes it hard to really care tbh. Meanwhile 'all my friends are dead' is a common refrain among the very old, whatever their previous occupation.

I think he's shit in most things. He's a ham.
He's a film star. Rather than an actor.

Actors are people like Judi Dench, who create and inhabit different characters.

Film stars create and inhabit some version of their real selves that they turn out again and again on-screen more or less unchanged.

I’d disagree with that, Pacino is a great actor, he just gets typecast. He’s given plenty of performances which are low key and subtle (The Godfather, Serpico, Sea of Love) his agent in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood this year is barely recognisable as Pacino. He is a huge Shakespeare buff and has given acclaimed performances of his plays on stage.

Not seen Once upon... yet. Looking forward to it. I'll take your word for it. He very certainly has a 'type' that he brings out, though, (and brought out here). I'm not necessarily knocking it - he brought this same type out for Glengarry Glen Ross, and it was a perfect fit for that role.

And a good film star - Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart - can be a wonderful thing...

I like Pacino but not sure I can ever forgive him for Scent of a Woman. :(

Al Pacino is a fantastic actor. He has been typecast somewhat as Italian/American/Mafia linked...however he has branched away from that.
I loved him in The Merchant of Venice and I believe he is to play King Lear.

He was brilliant in Scent of A Woman.

Yep well I thought so. :)
I thought the film and Pacino were both terrible. And the whole Oscar thing was like Scorsese winning his for The Departed -- because they deserved one though absolutely not for that role/film.

Well...we will just have to agree to differ. I liked it and thought he was great but then I'm a big Al Pacino fan...:)

He's great in some of his 70s films but he seems to be running on empty these days. Didn't rate him in Once Upon A Time In America at all.

Scent Of A Woman is terrible and it's one of his worst performances
It's not an exceptionally good film, though it is competently made. Pacino's performance is overblown and not exactly nuanced, but the character he plays is not the lead, he's more of a deus ex machina to facilitate the growth of Chris O'Donnell's character (who is the narrative focus).

For worse Pacino performances, consider the likes of Righteous Kill or 88 Minutes, where he is in the lead, or something like The Devil's Advocate (spoiler alert: THE TITLE IS LITERALLY THE TWIST) where he really does phone it in in some ridiculously overpaid little-more-than-a-cameo.

I have only seen a clip but there's one film in which he attempts a cockney accent. It ain't good.

Pacino is great in Carlito‘s Way, a film which I find very underrated. He’s far from being shouty or OTT in it.

As to the The Irishman, I feel I should see it but have very little enthusiasm to do so. I haven’t really loved a film by Scorsese since Goodfellas. I don’t understand why he keeps being so acclaimed, for three decades now I found most of his films overblown bores and some like Shutter Island are just staggeringly shit.

He was shouty in Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon, and eventually in Godfather II. The shouting has been gaining volume for a long time....

I want to see it but Scorsese moaning about people not watching at the cinema after doing the deal with Netflix... I mean fuck off what a stupid hypocrite.

But I actually agree. Will be crap on a laptop. I want to see it at the cinema but all the arty farty or independent places around here have stopped showing it, cant be bothered or are busy showing Frozen 2 three times a day.
