Looking forward to seeing this. Both De Niro and Al Pacino starring.

"Festival director Kent Jones said The Irishman is “funny, troubling, entertaining and, like all great movies, absolutely singular”. He added: “It’s the work of masters, made with a command of the art of cinema that I’ve seen very rarely in my lifetime, and it plays out at a level of subtlety and human intimacy that truly stunned me.”

That's a lot to live up to. Arguably Scorsese hasn't made a truly great film since Goodfellas.

The gangs all back together, so we'll see how it plays.

I thought when he tried to do 'Irish' in The Departed (which wasn't a patch on Infernal Affairs) it felt very laboured. Unlike his effortless depiction of Italian American life.

Let's see though.

Infernal Affairs was far superior.

DeNiro's Jimmy the Gent was American Irish, so I'm not too worried about that angle. Other than Hoffa, the other key characters in this story are Italian/Italian American.

The Departed was pretty flawed given the strong source material they had to work with. Setting it in Boston was a mistake in my opinion. The accents, gee whizz, were bad for the most part, and I've yet to be convinced that the DiCaprio and Scorsese pairing has been at all succesful in terms of quality cinema.

Goodfella's was flash and brash and glossy, but it still had some grit and grime. Scorsese's films seemed to have lost that since then.

I have high hopes for this film, yet I remain cautious about getting too excited.

I've only seen The Departed once (when it came out so quite a long time ago) but remember a 'let's have some diddly aye die music playing on the radio to establish Jack Nicholson's character's Irish credentials' bit which just felt really heavy handed. And yes, the accents were awful...

Agree about DiCaprio and Scorsese. I mean The Gangs of New York (not good, apart from Daniel Day-Lewis), The Aviator (too long, really didn't care), The Wolf Of Wall Street (hated everything about it), The Departed... TBF I haven't seen Shutter Island.

My expectations of Scorsese films these days are pretty low.

The Departed was also a true story, in addition to being sourced from Internal Affairs. Jack Nicholson's character was based on Irish-American crime boss Whitey Bulger, who was also an FBI informer.

Saw this tonight and thought it was very good, only fault was that the last 30 mins felt rather unnecessary.
Great performances from everyone and some funny dialogue.

Netflix release their most prestige films theatrically too, so they qualify for awards considerations like the Oscars and to keep the high profile directors who make them happy. They are increasingly funding the type of films Hollywood won’t make anymore, none franchise movies aimed at grown ups.

I've seen 2hrs so far... .. watching in instalments.
I think so far it is very good.
Loving Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
What did they do to their faces to make them look younger?

Hopefully I'll get to watch it in full again at the weekend..
:)

Just watched it. Looks amazing but Meh. Goodfellas, Godfather, Casino, James Ellroy, a bit Sopranos and the rest. If there was something really violent at the end of the road trip which didn't end weirdly. Didn't make sense of it or get the thing with his daughter. Maybe i missed the end. Glad I watched it just so I watched it but I wouldn't bother if I hadn't.
