Marine has conviction reduced to manslaughter

It started out as an act of rebellion - units were using them to provide footage to the media that the MOD refused to allow the media to gather for themselves. The reason was that the the fighting was far harder, and far more prevalent than the MOD wanted to admit - not least because the government of the day had no intention of the providing the force size and combat support that fighting on such a scale would require.

The MOD banned their use, and forbade the release of their footage. Quite a few soldiers got into very deep trouble for giving their footage to the media...

Eventually, once the MOD/government accepted the reality of the situation in Helmand province - not, of course, that it ever provided the resources required - the need to provide footage to the media receded, and the focus moved to gathering footage for units 'tour DVDs'. They sound a bit odd, but the families lapped them up because they allowed, to some degree, the families to understand what their people were going through.

Mmm, didnt see my sons till a couple of years after he left, if I had seen them while he was still over there I would be bald as opposed to grey haired.
NI was bad enough but the the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan made NI look like a walk in the park.

Obergefreiter, actually:p
Fuck me, thought it was, just checked it, seems its EXACTLY same rank the RAF gave me Grandad running a barrage balloon detachment in Dover
You seem rather more hip to classification/promotion than he ever was
Let me replace the title with Obergefreiter
Promotion would not have eluded you long I feel.....

Your grandfather actually fought alongside those of the Imperialist oppressors!! Funny, so did mine, captured at Dunkirk.
As Trump would say, defeatist loser, so sad.

I'm sure he would have, soldiers. on the whole spend most of their time doing boring repetitive Shyte, when the time comes to do what they are actually trained to do, things become 'interesting'
But this really isn't the forum to discuss sphincter tightening experiences:D

To be released in a few hours.
Heard his lawyer interviewed on R5 saying rather breathlessly that they'd had very strong interest from Hollywood.
Yuk.

What was that quote from that cunt lawyer, something like 'only left-wing bleeding heart types' would complain, and that 'right thinking' people would welcome the verdict. Urgh. 'Right thinking'.

Think I heard Bleeding Hearts at least twice, perhaps three times.

And the 'cunt' is now a terrorist it seems.

His barrister has just been on breakfast telly crowing about celebration and stuff at his release- as if this was a Birmingham 6 event. The whole thing is rather distasteful.

I saw that. The guy on the couch interviewed him did have a go at him when he said 'i appreciate your job is to be controversial but the majority of right thinking british people agree with his decision'.

Spent half the interview talking about who was going to play the cunt in the film that's apparently already in production discussions. He likes Tom Hardy. Also said many champagne bottles will be popping at the country residence where the family has gone to celebrate. Insane.

Wouldn't all "right thinking" people welcome this outcome given that he was found to be mentally ill at the time of the incident?

They probably would if it were not a steaming pile of bollocks cooked up to appease the Daily Mail types who were so very vocal in overriding the rule of law.

Ahhhh, I see.

When we agree with the cause it's diminished responsibility, when we don't it's "a steaming pile of bollocks".

You surprise me Bahnhoff! :D

I think if we send people to fight and kill people we need to acknowledge that some of those people will have some very serious problems and unique challenges that many won't understand. However, I don't see what people who have campaigned for his release gain by attacking those who show disquiet at a solider shooting a wounded man dead.

I don't understand your second sentence.
