Manchester City banned from Champions League for two seasons

Wow. But that's the Premier League and big money for you.

Manchester City have been banned from the Champions League for the next two seasons by Uefa and fined €30m (£25m) after they were found to have seriously misled European football’s governing body and broken financial fair play rules.

The severity of the ban from both of Uefa’s elite club competitions, and the scale of the fine, reflects how seriously Uefa’s FFP compliance bodies consider the club to have breached the rules and code of conduct.

City were found guilty by Uefa’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) of having falsely inflated their sponsorship revenues, when they made submissions for the FFP compliance process. The guilty finding follows an investigation sparked by the publication of “leaked” emails and documents by the German magazine Der Spiegel in November 2018.
The “leaked” emails and documents appeared to show that City’s owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the Abu Dhabi ruling family, was mostly funding the huge, £67.5m annual sponsorship of the City shirt, stadium and academy by his country’s airline, Etihad. One of the leaked emails suggested that only £8m of that sponsorship in 2015-16 was funded directly by Etihad, and the rest was coming from Mansour’s own company vehicle for the ownership of City, the Abu Dhabi United Group.

If it happens, I reckon this is the last we'll see of Pep in the Prem.

He's not had that great a season so I was thinking his job was already in the balance. This could be the end of his time at City. If the ban happens obv. Money doesn't talk in the prem. It screams and shouts and threatens to take it's ball back.

A long time coming that and probably still a lot buried in the paperwork/behind lawyers.

They will appeal of course and it will be overturned partially or possibly fully. It will cause a lot of headaches and other 'big' clubs will be worrying about this.

Are they out of the current competition too? Will they be eligible for Europa?

Pep with no PL or CL trophies :hmm: unlikely he will stay and no shortage of clubs wanting him. I had the feeling if they went out of this seasons CL he would be off anyway.

Wonder if Sterling is still pleased he left Liverpool :D

Why would the Premier League care? The more of their teams the world knows about, the better.

City are already a global brand now. If they get banned, it's time for young Sheffield United to take the spotlight for a while.

Doubt it - if anything, this has probably happened because of the cosy little world of the 'big' clubs has been so disturbed by money they can't compete with landing on clubs they don't consider as competition.

Next Man City manager odds

Mauricio Pochettino: 5/2
Berndan Rodgers: 9/2
Julian Nagelsmann: 7/1
Massimiliano Allegri: 12/1
Giovanni van Bronckhorst: 12/1

Was it within UEFA's power to dock them PL points? I suspect not. If it had been, it'd be comparable with what Saracens have been given, for not dissimilar offences.

I don't think the PL can do a points deduction for a season already in progress. It would have to be next season :hmm:

Not sure about that. The Football League can and regularly does deduct points mid-season for financial irregularities. This season it's been Macclesfield Town, although tbf that was about not having enough money for players rather than having too much. Is the PL different?

tbh a points deduction this season, unless it's about 50, won't make a whole lot of difference really if they're banned from Europe. ;)

Silver Lake US investment firm paid $500m late last year for 10% of City Football Group - where Man City is the main asset.

More lawyers incoming

5th place CL qualification then. Same for Europa league?
The minimum quota is for four English clubs to qualify for the UEFA Champions League and three for the UEFA Europa League.
With Citeh gone that is great news for Sheffield United, Wolves and some of the other mid table clubs.
