Man United - the team that gets me excited? 2024-2026

I don't like it when United fans say this. They always go on about being the biggest club in the world, they were the richest club in the world around most of that time - so why didn't they ever come up with a team to dominate Europe ?

Why can't the biggest and richest club in the world, with supposedly the greatest manager in history, come up with a side that can compete with Barça?
They didn’t get the same refs in Europe.

I'm not a United fan but they were a force in Europe towards the end of Fergie's tenure. Unfortunately for them they came up against peak Barca.

Klopp lost 2 out of 3 finals same as Ferguson
Fergie lost 2 out of 4 European cup finals at United. So better than Klopp. And he won the Cup Winners Cup for the record.

United dominated English football for best part of 20 years under Fergie. Klopp at Liverpool is a blip by comparison. Not even a comparison.

Aye and I'm not convinced that if Barcelona had magically disappeared in that period that United would have been the team who dominated. In the leading pack certainly, but weren't the consistent 2nd best in Europe.

You can see the history here, only 4 finals in the history of the Champion's League:

Anyway, United clearly underperformed in Europe in the context of their domestic domination. Even Fergusons says that.

I don’t really see why you’d even make the comparison. Liverpool fans desperate to hype Klopp who won one title (and the Covid season).

From memory, didn't Liverpool's performance actually drop off a bit in the empty stadium bit of the Covid season? They were miles ahead from the pre-Covid normal bit of the season.

No surprises really, Ronaldo had gone off to Real, Barca had Messi. They weren't selling their best players to anyone when they were only going to improve.
Could say the same for Barca really, they won the league what 5 times in a row?
Real just wrecked everyone.

This is pretty much a scenario for factions in the team to start piping up and saying they don't know what eth's philosophy is, how they are supposed to be playing etc. In the Summer he was dead man, walking given a slightly longer plank to walk, now he's looking down at open water.

Not really.
Klopp Liverpool final league position:
8, 4, 4, 2, 1, 3, 2, 5, 3.

I mean Ten Hag came 3rd in his first season and he’s already won 2 trophies.

In 27 seasons in the top flight under Sir Alex's management United were Champions 13 times, second on 7 occasions and third 3 times. They finished outside the top three on only 4 occasions, all of which were back in the days of the First Division.

No comparison.

You brought Klopp up.

Not the point - the point is Ferguson wasn't really good enough to dominate Europe.

Think we might be at cross purposes. I was responding to your comment 'and the covid season', which I took to you suggesting it was a weird season to win or not the same as a 'normal' victory. I was just pointing out that Liverpool effectively won that season before lockdown and their margin of victory was probably less than it would have been otherwise.

Anyway, for me, Ferguson's greatness was not so much what he did in any particular season - though the treble wasn't all that shabby - it was that he kept going all those years. Bloody mindedness, toughness, being a twat to be honest, but responding to other sides improving, making changes and going in to work every day and doing it. Guardiola (certainly), Klopp, Mourhino and a few others have better CVs over a shorter stretch but don't have quite that same gravel in your guts and spit in your eye.

It's not how much you have, it's what you do with it.

Just watched the Spurs highlights. That was some rotten defending and Fernandes is an idiot who shouldn't be captain.

Away at Villa, vs one of the best, quickest, most relentlessly hard running centre forwards in Ollie Watkins.

"Maguire and Evans."

"But Boss, Ollie Wat..."

"MAGUIRE AND EVANS."

No need to have pacey centre backs when Bruno Fernandes can take him out. Oh...
