Música de Brasília

Oi Pessoal! As many of you know I'm totally in love with Brazil. I would rip up my British passport and paint myself yellow, green and blue in a heartbeat. Much Brazilian music contains elements of the famously difficult to translate concept of saudade ; my favourite definition of which is a feeling when "Something sad makes you feel happy, or something happy makes you feel sad."

Of course, funk has very little saudade and a lot of raw beats and rudeness.

Let's have um pouco de todo.

A bit of bossa to start with.

A bit of bossa to start with.

Waters of March, classico! The lyrics are amazing in English - this lovely version has subs, but theres some straight english versions out there too

sometimes with non-english music i love it but dread to think what the lyrics are - but sometimes we really miss out, proper poetry on that one

Tropicalia was a psychedelic rock movement inspired by Sgt. Pepper and 60's trippiness. It also had a strong anti-dictatorship undercurrent to it.

Os Mutantes (The Mutants) could be viewed as a Brazilian Pink Floyd - complete with Barrett-esque band members.

This was covered by The Bees and may be familiar as a result. Excellent tune.

Anti-government song from Raul Seixas. In the first verse a monster tries to shag him too.

Funky Gal Costa Tropicalia. Tune!

The song is full of puns and wordplay - it's still beautful when translated though. Elis spoke out against the dictatorship calling them "gorillas". To stay out of jail she was forced to sing the national anthem on telly. The nation mourned when she died, much too young, a beautiful voice.

"Eu bebo sim, Eu tô vivendo. Tem gente que não bebe. E tá morrendo. Tem gente que já tá com o pé na cova. Não bebeu e isso prova que a bebida nao faz mal."

"I drink and I'm alive. There's people that don't drink and they're dying. There's people who've got one foot in the grave. They don't drink and that's proves booze isn't bad for you."

Classic bossa tunes. Familiar or not, hard to beat.

Beautiful voice - famous for THE bossa song that's going to crop on this thread sooner or later.

Impossibly beautiful in every conceivable way. Voice - music - lyrics - incredible.

More perfection.

Que coisa linda! Que coisa louca!

I'm whacking these posts out fairly carelessly. I'll come back and try and be more coherent.

Brazil has a ridiculous number of musical styles - many of which I'm clueless about. Axé is big there, forro is big, sertanejo - Salvador has a massive reggae thing going on, there's funk, samba, MPB, bossa nova and so on and so on.

Bla bla - back later.

Something recent:

Something much older, and so so heartbreaking, this song always brings a lump to my throat: It's a mother singing about her son (meu guri) - they live in a favela. She's so proud of him, in a very naive way. It's a political song, basically.

And from the other side, whatever that means, I love this!!!!!

And anything by Legião Urbana, but I'm not sure that would make any sense unless you are Brazilian and grew up in the 80s... They were ACTUALLY from Brasilia ;)

No - didn't grow up in Brazil in the 80s, just have always been a secret admirer of Sepultura:thumbs:

Okay...the books are sorted as they are gonna get this weekend and the 50 cds I found in the shed can wait to be sorted later/tomorrow. ;)

What I want to say is WHAT? No Caetano Veloso yet? No, not from Brasilia, from Bahia but who cares? :D

Massive artist, part of the tropicalisimo/Tropicalia movement

Tropicália, also known as Tropicalismo, is a Brazilian artistic movement that arose in the late 1960s. It encompassed art forms such as theatre, poetry, and music. The movement was characterized by a combination of the popular and the avant-garde, as well as a fusion of traditional Brazilian culture with foreign influences.

Today, Tropicália is chiefly associated with the musical faction of the movement, which merged Brazilian and African rhythms with rock and roll. Musicians who were part of the movement include Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, and the poet/lyricist Torquato Neto, all of whom participated in the 1968 album Tropicália: ou Panis et Circencis, which served as a musical manifesto.

Pretty sure Milton is from Minas Gerais? Might be wrong. Him, Caetano, Chico, all the tropicalia gang were part of the soundtrack of my childhood :)

Edit: My personal childhood idols out of them all are Chico Buarque, Milton and the amazing Elis Regina.... Caetano and Gil I like too, but the first three feel like members of my family, their music and their voices mean so much to me!

I just had a look and I've found too different birth places for him. I concede you are probably right and that the internet/someone listed his birth place as Rio in error. :)

She was 'gaucha', from Rio Grande do Sul. She died from an accidental overdose of cocaine, alcohol, and temazepan in the early 80s - I still remember how much my mum cried when it was on the news :(

Soul Jazz put out three amazing Brazilian Bossa comps a few years back, Bossa Nova which covers a lot of bases, Bossa Jazz (which is more jazzy) and this one below, which is about Elenco Records, a cutting edge bossa label with a amazing artwork that didnt do massive sales at the time but was on another level musically and really pushed the limits of what Bossa could do...

BRAZIL BOSSA BEAT!
BOSSA NOVA AND THE STORY OF ELENCO RECORDS, BRAZIL
Soul Jazz Records

sjr242(elenco).jpg

Following on from our Bossa Nova album and deluxe book (compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker) comes this incredible collection of bossa nova tracks from Brazil’s infamous Elenco Records, the legendary record label whose releases represent a who’s who of bossa nova artists in Brazil in the 1960s – Vinicius de Moraes, Edu Lobo, Baden Powell, Nara Leao and many, many more.

This deluxe CD-pack comes with a massive 75-page book (and superb limited double heavyweight gatefold vinyl edition) containing extensive text on the music of Elenco Records and the story of the label, whose iconic output represented the pinnacle of Bossa Nova music in Brazil during this celebrated era.

The best artists, the best designs, the best music, the best everything! – Elenco is the definitive Bossa Nova label (the equivalent of Studio One in Reggae, Blue Note in Jazz etc).

None of these tracks have ever before been released outside of Brazil, and have over the years Elenco releases have become the holy grail for fans and collectors alike of Brazilian music.

Elenco’s superb, high quality output featured all the bossa nova major artists and defined everything that was great in bossa nova and Brazilian music with stunning graphics and sophisticated sound.
