London Anarchist Communist Group Public Meeting On Free Public Transport December 1st 2019

Discussion Meeting: Free Public Transport for All

The current transport system is based on the car and road-building culture. This is one of the key causes of climate change and pollution, both air and noise. Meanwhile, the public transport system is overcrowded and expensive in cities and non-existent in rural areas. With housing increasing in price in the centre of urban areas, people are forced to move further and further out and end up paying a large portion of their wages and time just to get to work. And, there is continual pressure to undermine the working conditions and safety concerns of transport workers.
Join us for a discussion of these issues and help develop a campaign for free public transport for all, building a united movement of workers and users.

Be interested to hear about this. Acorn and some of the climate groups are adopting free buses for all run by workers or local councils as a demand.

Whereas anything that reduces CO2 emissions is a good thing, the limiting factor is not cost but infrastructure. Anyone who has used the tube at peak periods knows how clogged it is, but digging another network isn't really feasible.

I think that the way forward may be not more public transport, but less travel.

In November thousands of people will be flying into Scotland for a climate change conference. Why don't they stay where they are and set up a teleconference?

Not all travel is international, Sass. In fact the vast majority of journeys are local. If you read the OP, you’ll see it bears no relation to the comments you bumped the thread to make. Nor it it necessary to dig a new London Underground to improve travel into the city from the suburbs.

(FWIW, I agree that the climate talks should happen over Skype).
