Lewisham Neighbourhoods Chitter Chatter

In October 2024, over 100 HASL (Housing Action Southwark & Lambeth) members descended on Lewisham council’s housing office in a Halloween themed protest occupation over the appalling treatment of their members Maribel and Maira. In total the two families had spent almost 4 years in hostels and Maira’s 2 year old son had spent his entire life living in a hostel. The incredible turn out, with members coming from across London and even from as far as Slough, made this HASL's biggest protest occupation so far. In response to the protest, Lewisham council finally gave Maribel and her son a 2 bedroom, self-contained temporary accommodation flat close to Maribel’s mother who helps with childcare. The new temporary accommodation is a huge improvement on the previous conditions the family were enduring. HASL are growing fast and are now the largest mutual aid peer support action group in the country. Their model of using mass direct action on top of collective advice and support is getting results; people with housing issues everywhere can learn a lot from their inspiring - and fun - mobilisations.

(for those new to the patch, army and navy - the old chiesmans department store - was where the police station is now. the bridge across the high street was put in some time in the early 80s - the store had suffered from being the wrong side of the high street)
Thought that was so cool as a kid!

The Ministry of Justice has reportedly begun an investigation into Jake Farhi, who was convicted of the 2008 murder of schoolboy, The Late Jimmy Mizen, after reports emerged that, following his release on licence in June 2023, he has recorded 'music' referencing the murder that he committed.

In 2009, Jake Farhi was jailed for life with a minimum term of 14 years for the murder. Reports now claim he is TEN, a drill rap 'artist' whose 'music' often features violent themes, and who conceals his identity with a balaclava in videos.

It has also been claimed that several scenes from one of Jake Farhi's 'music' videos appear to have been illegally filmed from inside prison.

The track 'Dirty Game' includes footage looking outside the broken window of a prison cell before filming along a corridor and out into an exercise yard. At one point, a hand is seen holding a suspicious substance wrapped in a pouch:

Examples of Jake Farhi's 'music':

"Sharpen up my blade I've got to keep those necessary. Stay alert and kept it ready, any corner could be deadly.

Judge took a look at me, before the trial even started he already knows he's gonna throw the book at me."

"See a man's soul fly from his eyes and his breath gone... Seeing blood spilled same floor he was left on."

35 year-old Jake Fahri, also known as drill 'rapper' TEN, who was given a life sentence in 2009 with a minimum term of 14 years for the murder of Jimmy Mizen and released on licence in June 2023, has now been recalled to prison for breaching his licence conditions.

A Probation Service spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with Jimmy Mizen’s family who deserve better than to see their son’s murderer shamelessly boasting about his violent crime.

“All offenders released on licence are subject to strict conditions. As this case shows, we will recall them to prison if they break the rules.”

Following the October 2020 inquest finding into the 9 March 2018 death of The Late Kevin Andre Clarke, a Lewisham man who was restrained to death by officers from the Metropolitan Police, the resulting disciplinary proceedings against two of the police officers concerned, PC Danielle Barnes and PC Elizabeth McAleenan, have ended in predictable fashion with both officers cleared of gross misconduct:

“Sadly, the family had no expectations of justice as they believe this system is clearly not designed to deliver accountability, particularly where there is a death in police custody.

“This outcome, while devastating for the family, was sadly, in their opinion, inevitable.”
