Lets discuss Artificial Intelligence image and video generation.. indeed ..

So, there are a few online AI image generators.

Many of them like ChatGPTs version from OpenAI are pretty much toys, their output is easy to see as AI generated. But the intention is there and it does follow commands when asked to include things.

Then there are the bearded man cuddling a baby donkey. IMO that is real ..

Well anyhow, please feel free to post images and video and explain why they are / are not AI ..

If, as the title suggests, we are to discuss AI image generation, then I say it’s pretty
shit. Both from the fact that often it looks unrealistic to then, when it does look vaguely real, getting you to question whether any image is real. And if it gets so good such that you don’t know whether a picture is real or faked, I’m less likely to believe any image which then makes looking at other people’s pictures largely pointless. Most pictures are not normally reflective of true life but at least when you know that they are based in reality you might believe that you might be able to experience such imagery in real life.

Hi Maltin - I keep finding cute pictures on X and posting them here to be met with the response that they are AI. It frustrates me because usually a competent photographer with a compliant subject could have made that image, i.e. it could well be genuine.

AI images muddy the water. I want to know what is genuine.

That’s my concern. If everything can be faked, what’s the point in enjoying photography. Yes, an image can be pleasant looking or not, but if I can’t tell if it is real, it’s likely to diminish my enjoyment

Yes, that is a valid concern - I share it.

I suppose we have been heading this way for a while what with initially dark room manipulation, then digital and photoshop. Skilled editors could change photos quite significantly but they would still be based on a photograph.

Now we can describe an image and an AI image generator will produce an image out of thin air.

I have less concerns with movies. With films, I know that they are fake and therefore whether something is fake using traditional effects or CGI bothers me less; as long as they can carry me along with the storytelling, I will be captivated. However, I prefer if I have the sense that a scene is realistic rather than completely computer generated.

It's not photography though; not that photography is any more real than other forms of visual representation. The problem with AI is that it isn't intelligent. It regurgitates and rearranges clichés. I asked for middle aged anarchists with Palestinian flags and punk influenced morris dancers outside a Brixton pub and eventually got the above. In the first iteration everyone was white and male. I instructed it to be more diverse. It took two tries before coming up with the version above.
