Kirk Douglas - an appreciation

Next to the Kubrick films, my favourite Kirk Douglas films are Billy Wilder's tabloid media satire Ace in the Hole, The Bad and the Beautiful, an excellent Hollywood melodrama about Hollywood and Disney's steam-punk 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I enjoy the sheer WTFness of The Fury, a mash-up of political thriller and supernatural horror. For entertainingly awful films, few can compete with Saturn 3 in which Douglas and Farrah Fawcett frolic naked around a space station while pursued by a robot with Harvey Keitel's brain.

I'd go with Paths of Glory, Ace in the Hole and TBATB. Oh, and Out of the Past/Build My Gallows High just because it's a great film in general.

102 today! Glad to have been so wrong. Happy birthday Spartacus.

Olivia del Havilland is still alive, too - she's six months older than Douglas  and Doris Day (96) is still with us, too.

I'm glad you're glad. As I have both Kirk and Olivia as my Death Pool nominees, I'm bemused that my deliberate selection of centenarians has been so unsuccessful. It now seems likely that they, alongside Vera Lynne, Earl Cameron and I. M Pei. Will make it back onto my list again next year.

It's like lottery numbers. You have to keep playing them now.

Olivia de Havilland will outlive the cockroaches. She started her career in the mid-30s, a decade before Douglas and she’s still tough as nails.
