Justgiving and their sneaky 10% 'Voluntary contribution'

I seem to remember paying for a ticket to see Dinosaur Jr in 1991 by postal order (I didn't have a bank account for some years in my early twenties).

I remember paying for stuff with them by mail order back in the dark ages, and adding stamps to get the exact value. I think they used to sell 1p stamps so you could make up odd amounts, although I might be imagining this.

Until just a few years ago they still sold 1p stamps so you could pay exact value on items like sending a small parcel or large letter to the US, where the cost could vary a lot. Not sure if it's the same now.

I sent a bookmark (home-made, embroidered) to a friend in the US and the front of the envelope was almost entirely stamps. She still has it :D

I remember sending something which required loads of stamps (possibly low denominations like 1p), and stuck them all around the edges of the envelope like a frame. I thought it looked very stylish. :D

In theory you could use the stamps to write rude words - that would be amusing.

He's probably got the first issue - and picked it up on the first day it was issued by Ye Olde Royal Maile. :D

The first universal postage stamps were issued on the first of May 1840 (although not usable until the 6th of May) and were 1d.

The groat ceased ceased to be minted for general circulation in 1850, but had been falling in circulating numbers well before that.

There was never a stamp denominated as a groat, however, the 1855 4d stamp, could technically have been referred to as costing a groat.

Groats are still minted, and are part of the Maundy sets.

Cheers - that is oddly interesting. Didn't know groats were in circulation as late as that, as in my mind they were middle-ages era coinage. :)

I spotted this the other day when I made a donation. It did confuse me somewhat for a few seconds. I think it gave me the option of reducing it to 5% from 10% but you had to manually type in 0 to pay nothing. A bit cheeky I thought.

It’s a massive pisstake, these are all companies already taking a slice of your donation.

the service for one of my charities over here has a $3 fee, so 10 pounds seems alot. (my yankee keyboard doesn't have a pound sign.)
if you don't add the $3 they take it out of the donation. so a $100 donation becomes a $97 dollar donation, unless you agree to give $103. they tell you this ahead of time.
my other charities administer their own donation pages so no added charge.

On a related note, I've noticed at least two petrol stations near me (and no doubt all over the country) asking if you want to make a 'charity donation' when you pay with a card.

They don't even say what the charity is, FFS!

I had to nag them to get my money back and now they're surely busting a gut to refund me the money they shouldn't have taken in the first place:

Thank you for getting back to me and confirming your information. I have now put in a request to have a postal order sent out to you. We normally send these out by the end of the week via first class post. I would suggest allowing up to 5 working days to receive the postal order. Please let me know if there is anything else I could help with.

A fucking postal order.
