John-Paul Sartre

Him and de Beauvoir, Derrida, Foucault etc all signed a petition to legalise noncery.

In 1977, a petition was addressed to the French parliament calling for the abrogation of several articles of the age of consent law. The primary argument behind the petition was the disparity in age of consent created by a previous piece of legislation, which made heterosexual sex legal at the age of 15, but prohibited sodomy and similar acts until age 18.
Seems to be about the ages of legal consent for heterosexuals and homosexuals?
Heidegger is a much safer bet. No skeletons in his closet.
Not a thing

Not to defend this but I think you have to understand it in a context of a group that were seeking to push against sexual boundaries that precluded many things we would now consider perfectly reasonable, such as homosexuality. In hindsight, we see which of these boundaries are necessary a bit more easily.

Id rather cancel him, and find another philosopher to read. I was just recommended Heidegger and upon first research I discover that he might be a Nazi!!

I don't know, it all seems very clearly linked to specific cases of men raping children.

Are you actually interested in learning about philosophy or do you just want to find a hero?

Depends on what you mean by Nazi. I mean, was he a card-carrying member of the National Socialist Party of Germany? Yes, yes he was.
I dont want to read anything by a Nazi. These things should be pointed out clearly on their wiki pages.

Is there a branch of philosophy that explores the process of occluding the bits of thinking that are propounded and codified by people whose morals are objectionable?

Yes it will. I dont want anything to do with him. There are many more Philosophers to study. It seems they need vetting first!
Schopenhauer knocks them all into a cocked hat anyway. Apparently, he was only fond of dogs, and only in a good way.

"Nietzsche wrote that a philosophy is always the biography of the philosopher."

The Myth of Sisyphus is a good place to start with Albert Camus.

I‘ve got that book on my shelf, in much the same way as RD2003 describes the fate of Being and Nothingness. A bit different, cos a girlfriend gave it to me thinking it was about Sisyphus the king of Ephyra, cos I’m into Greek mythology. I’ve never known if she knew it was philosophy and was trying to expand my mind or if she was as ignorant as I and just thought “Sisyphus, siSYphus… tomato tomayto…

I did do L’Etranger for my French lit A level though.

which was another misunderstanding.
I thought I was signing up for French A level and only worked out it was French Lit when we weren’t doing any actual French by the third lesson. So I’ve not got my French A level but I’ve got an accidental tourist A level in French Lit. We did Molière too. Of course I only got through it by reading them in English. Cos I never did anything further than O level French,

Camus's political conclusions were, in practical terms, deeply disappointing (to a 20-odd year-old), and useless. I expected more.

If you want to stay well clear of sexual dodginess you might want to give the Stoics a wide berth.

Yes, but I think the nomenclature is divided between “wokerati” and “monothought clique”.

There are all kinds of people in the world 8ball . Not everyone is as smart and clever as you.

:D

That’s v flattering (I am blind to sarcasm after a few beers ;) ). But I just mean that I tried reading that book and found the first couple of chapters pretty good, but my academic background is in evolutionary biology, so I skipped to the bit about Darwin and it was so far off that it destroyed my trust in every other description in the book.

The rest of it might be great but when you come to it only knowing one thing and the book fluffs that bit, it dents your opinion of the whole.
