Cheers, though I'm slightly confused as to why the tories said they would run a candidate against him at the next election. I'd have assumed he'd have reverted to being the tory candidate at the next election and they would have had to deselect him rather than run against him?? Maybe not, perhaps becoming the speaker means you give up party membership? Question doesn't normally arise as they usually fuck off to the lords straight away.

This was when Bercow was threatening to stay on as Speaker. To do that he’d have had to stand in Buckingham again as an independent. Tories opposing him would have broken convention.

I'm not sure as anyone has attempted to stay in the commons after finishing their speaker role. I'm not sure the elevation to cross-bench member of the lords is completely automatic though - its expected and the modern norm (previous norm was to give them a viscountcy) but maybe bitter tories could fuck with this if they really wanted to, I dont know.
