John Bercow ruling on meaningful vote

Never thought I'd say it but I'm impressed with how Bercow handled things today. He was pretty brave, You could tell the Conservative MP's were furious and going all out for him. I particularly loved the 'not next year, month, week, day but now" comment and the response to the daft accusations about the sticker in his wife's car

What do you think about the comments calling his neutrality and position into question? Is he doing his job? I think he has played a blinder today...thoughts?

If you've not seen what went on apretty good edited highlights clip below.....

Not played a blinder, but on the right side of the curve ......deal gets voted down 21 days we aint got.

I don't know that it's brave. What negative consequences could there be for him?
they're going to stop inviting him to their parties apparently.

He is a terrorist and a butcher who needs hanging.

Yeah this. He's a self-aggrandising cunt with a horrible history. He's also currently under investigation for bullying as well.

I do doubt his partiality on the subject of Brexit and he does seem to take a strange pleasure from trolling his own party (amusing as it is). There is a wider point to this particular spat and that is if you're are going to have a system that is set up and governed by precedent and protocol then things like this are going to happen all the time. There is no precedent for this therefore it shouldn't happen... Righto.

With no effective opposition is good to see a coalition of MP's from all parties and the speaker flex their muscles.

We need the Queen to pitch in next :D
Yes the dream of all MPs putting aside their differences and uniting as one in the good of the nation behind a strong leader lives on. Capital labour and the state united in one body. There is hope yet.

It's brilliant. As others have said if only the Monarch would just come out against the riff raff then we'd truly be able to destroy Brexit once and for all.

My only criticism is the lack of a brave politician who will now call for the police to be armed and ordered to shoot the fascists harassing brave Anna Soubry and other democrats.

In what sense has he played a blinder?

Seems to me a Tory bastard who has always liked the rules when they suited him has just changed the rules when they don't. And for what? It's all just Parliamentary pantomime, it's meaningless.

Whoever wrote the description in that awful link you've supplied - where the backbench Tory is described as having "handed the moral victory to Bercow on a silver platter" - seems to be delusional, dishonest or both.

What is "playing a blinder" in this context?

I think it's coming up with a witty put-down of the bloke about the sticker. Can't see much else. You can see his brain working on that one - stalling at first, then the moment he comes up with the solution, he visibly perks up, and he is very pleased with himself by the end of it. As for the rest, I'm not sure anyone outside of the HoC much cares.

As I'm sure I've mentioned before, Bercow was in my politics classes at uni. He has never been anything else than a driven, self-aggrandising little shit who has been determined to make his mark ever since he went to media classes on how to become an MP run by the Tory party when he was 18. And now, in his terms, this is him making his mark. Brave my arse. He's a cunt, completely in it for himself, and there is no nobility or bravery in his actions whatsoever.

I repeat, he's a cunt. That's all anyone should ever think of him.

I think that Bercow is an obnoxious little shit, however, cometh the moment, cometh the man. His action was absolutely correct. The government must be held to account.

I don't disagree with your analysis of his personality, however, he has ensured that May cannot just run the clock down.

Fair do's Sasaferrato ... lots of people don't like John Bercow and often for very good reasons, and others who don't like MPs/Parliament generally, are probably reluctant to say much if anything in Bercow's favour either.

But IMO he's doing what he's supposed to just now.

According to John Crace in yesterday's Guardian :

Parliamentary sketch said:
Seven former Speakers of the House of Commons have been executed. To judge by the looks on the faces of many on the government benches, John Bercow came dangerously close to becoming the eighth. For well over an hour of points of order that came dangerously close to outright entropy, Tory MPs were spitting blood about the Speaker’s decision to allow an amendment by the Conservative Dominic Grieve to force the government to have a vote on a Brexit plan B within three days if its plan A was rejected next Tuesday.
