Japanese obsession with 'cute'

I've always known that there's a thing with some Japanese people liking 'cute' (kawaii) stuff but I recently joined a language exchange app and it's even more than I expected. People going on about cute food, cute clothes, cute animals etc etc etc etc. Basically cute everything. It's not just young people either. Is it really that muchof a national obsession?
