jam making...

Anyone know where you can buy jam jars?

I've got a few empty jars I could sterilise, but I'd like some nice ones so I could give the jam to friends - probably more attractive if its not in an empty mayo jar.
This lot sell all things jammy, but they're quite expensive.

But if you clean off the labels and make nice new hand made pretty labels I think it would look lovely! I'm sure we could do a jam jar sweep. I know I have quite a few and if we ask for board members to donate empty jars we could end up with quite a selection. Great way to recycle and save money.

pound a jar?! flippin eck you could buy one filled with jam for less.

It's the lids that is the problem - I was planning to make nice new labels but they all say 'Hellemans' or something on the lid!

Last time I was oop north one of the supermarkets was doing a marmalade making competition and selling all the jars etc. Don't get that in London

I think you can buy just lids but you can also cut out pieces of pretty paper/fabric and put them over the lids with an elastic band. Tbh I would prefer it if someone gave me jam in a recycled jar and just made it look pretty.

Jam jar lids

But you just buy little cellophane discs, secure them with elastic bands and if you have any pretty left over material, you can cut that into discs too and secure it over the top too... looks lovely!

Alternatively you can seal with wax.

Edited to say.. got there a bit late.. but basically I agree with MAdzone, I'd prefer to get it in a recycled jar myself...

thanks for the tips gaijingirl and madzone - cellophane lids sounds like the way forward.

need to go and pick some more blackberries first.

I'm soooo excited about making jam! :D

Well I've made my first ever batch of jam!

My pan wasn't really big enough and speckled half the kitchen in jam droplets when it was boiling.

Then when I'd taken the jam jars out of the oven I forgot they were hot and picked them up with my bare hands - ouch!

Had 750g of blackberries, freshly picked, and made three pots of jam.

I used about 650g of jam sugar which was too much, it tastes too sugary. If I did it again I'd use less sugar and more lemon juice.

But I'm feeling quite proud of my little jars of jam - gonna make some nice labels for them today

why thank you! :) I am feeling very pleased!

I can feel the obsession creeping in...I am already hatching a plan for bulk-gathering of jam-jars!

Is anyone still up for doing this on Sunday? I spoke to K's Dad last night and he says that the scrubs are positively bursting with blackberries and he will draw us a map of the best places to pick them if we go.

If there aren't too many of us I can even ask if we can use his kitchen to make the jam as he's right next to the scrubs and he has a hooooge kitchen with two hobs and all the equipment 'cos he makes jam himself. There's absolutely no guarantee he'll say yes though.. but he might.

I'm well up for doing it this sunday.... will keep an eye to see if it's going ahead!

If you can't get hold of a kitchen there, we could use mine which is a reasonable size for a few of us to lounge around in :)

only just been back to look at this thread again - wow! can do it this sunday if it's during the day - got to be over in kennington by the early eve though... will I have enough time?

Well, I've sent off an email to K's Dad. I think that, if he says yes, as long as we get out reasonably early and leave the place spotless it will be ok.

K's parents are away that day so we shouldn't be in their way, but I think it would be good to be out before they return, just so they don't come back to burnt sugar jamastrophe!! But if he's not up for it, Toggle kindly said we could do it at hers which is not a million miles from Wormwood Scrubs either!

RRRRRRREsult... K's Dad says it's fine. He's drawn us a map for the blackberries... he says they're not as plentiful as they were before, but there are still loads. He's also said we can use the windfall apples from his apple tree as they're having to throw them away, so we can make blackberry and apple, or use his juicer to make apple juice!!

I want to keep numbers down as they have two Jack Russells and I don't want to take the piss.. but so far there's 3 of us and Toggle I hope will be coming.. so 4 of us - I think 5 people would be cool, but I'd rather not have more - sorry :( . I suggest that we start quite early on Sunday morning if that's ok.. as it'd be good if we can finish early-mid afternoon so we can be sure that everything is cleaned up before they return, which may be earlyish.

He says they've packed up their real jam making equipment (as they're hoping to move to Brixton this year), but he finds just using large saucepans (which aren't packed up) works fine.

We will need to collect empty jars.. so I may start a thread and see if between us we can pick up empty jars from other urbanites! Hurrah! I'll PM the four mentioned above with directions to the house... shall we say a 10:30 am start? Or is that too early? (personally I'd be happy to start earlier, but I'll probably stay there overnight on Sat so I won't have a journey Sunday morning).

:D :D

I'll bring some sticky labels.. can someone bring felt tip pens? I'll look for rubber bands too.. off cuts of material would be nice if anyone has any,,,

11am is better for me too :D

yay jam, jam, jam, it's going to be good. I'd better start looking for kit... will buy some felt tips later!

I should be able to do felt tip pens and scraps of material, having kids crafty stuff about has it's benefits. I'm going to go whine to mates later today about getting spare jars off them.

...have we got a recipe? And are we making jam, or are we going to be madly ambitious and try to make jelly? And has anybody got a preserving pan? And....

so many questions!

K's Dad did say it would be easier to do jam than jelly. He also said we don't need a preserving pan just a big saucepan.. but then I'm no expert at all!

He also said he has lots of recipes (he's got a little cookery library there) but it might be best to look for some before hand. I suppose blackberry and apple jam would be best?

How hard can it be... Q's Dad says it's dead easy...

do we need to get jam sugar or whatever it was then? or I guess maybe the apples have enough pectin?
yours, a jam making virgin in brixton...
