Jam, jelly or Marmalade? Difference?

1927

Funnier than he thinks he is.
I’ve been boiling up some old fruit if found in fridge and it tastes amazing. But have I made ham or marmalade?
Jelly is made purely from juice, so it’s not that, but I’m not clear on what constitutes a jam of marmalade!

Marmalade is usually from a majority of citrus and proportions can vary - with or without shreds of skin (but can have other fruits / ginger present)

Jelly is strained to remove pips / stones / lumps.

Jam / preserve / conserve is everything else ...

Jam and cheese are eaten together all the time, I can’t think of any that don’t taste good.

Quince jam is marmalade though.
No, Portuguese marmalada is made from quince and is the original root of the word marmalade. Quince jam is not necessarily marmelada and is only called marmelade out of confusion. Marmelade is made from citrus fruits and its etymology has nothing to do with this. Lots of words mean different things from their roots.
