I think she wouldn't have done it without her arm being held up her back. He led them both into their financial difficulties with his ideas of getting rich quick and once she was into the new scheme there was no way out. It's telling that both sons have forgiven her but whether they've forgiven their father remains pretty much unsaid. That says a lot about the dynamics IMO.
