Is the tree fucked? No, but it isn't well. They are very hard to kill, even when deliberately trying to do so.

If you want to keep it, repot in a bigger pot, feed it, and keep it watered.

Plants of Distinction sell a 'giant pink' wallflower, gentlegreen. They are out of seed stock at the moment but worth trying them later in the summer, maybe. Avoid the dismal 'Sugar Rush' varieties though.
Personally, I have been all out for perennial wallflowers which lack the fragrance (I have stocks for that) but flower for months. Winter Orchid' is my favourite.

Update: A tale of two trees...



Tree on the right is the one my neighbour's son put in...as dead as a dodo.. Tree on the left is the Japanese cherry I put in last May.

The Japanese cherry appears to be doing okay having survived last summer.
