is there a SWP 'Socialist Worker' newspaper archive/resource (1970s issues) ??

chico enrico

No hair shows you care.
just found out that issues of Socialist Worker from around 1977 - 1979 have a load of photos of fights with the NF/BM that a mate of mine who wrote a book about his (nazi-bashing) exploits over this period features in.

Just wondering if there is any way of going through copies of the paper from this period? If they have an archive...or even if any library might have a collection?

Any suggestions most appreciated. :)

Hull University library has the complete run of SW (and Militant). Although one loyal comrade has torn out the famous "Troops in!" front page. :)

british library should have them I'd have thought.

good suggestion, but don't most libraries transfer their periodical archives to microfesh? I was wondering more if there was some sort of left wing resource/media archive type place that might have them so copies could be made of certain photos .

"The Trots will do their utmost to destroy any evidence of their u-turns"

Unlike the Stalinists and photos, of course - oh dear, why did I bother replying....... .

You can still print from microfiche, can't you? Mind you, a print of a photo of a photo in a 1970s B&W hot metal newspaper...

LSE Library should have most of them, they've got most of the libertarian socialist magazines from that era.

Maybe you could check under the bed of your local long time SWP stalwart?

Failing that, the back of their wardrobe.

Looks like the Marx Memorial Library in Farringdon has some copies but they seem a bit confused about it...

they aren't confused; you are.

Card suggests 1969-1979 held, but these were not found during cataloguing - reserve?
2001 - nos.1752, 1772; 2002 - no.1792; 2003 - no.1857. Other lacks in earlier years

it appears some of them have gone missing/been binned at some point.

Its a wonderful catalogue of political gymnastics with some spectacular and wonderful somersaults. I read it for excitement in the bog.

1) Warwick University Modern Records Centre worth a try

2) I have many SWs from that period--but not catalogued yet, nor in the front of queue for such..
