Fuck all that, haven't seen Zinc for years, last I heard he was living in Tokyo, have you downlarged my tunage yet or what, eh???

(found the original flyer for the very first Hedgeparty I did back in '91, might have to upload it, Zinc was the guest DJ and nobody "got" drum and bass/jungle at the time... fucking top night though... gawd bless the old duty free runs to Calais hypermarkets in order to stock up on those tiny bottles of beer!!! Rave On!!!)

I have only seen him at the Northumberland pub in Charlotte Street these last few years, he records around the corner in some studio I think, and his mate and my mate go back a long way, friend of a friend kind of thing, but I think he's made his money. And then some. ;)

zinc works part-time in a trainer shop in bethnal green. and he still does a fair bit of production, both as zinc/dopeskillz doing dnb and as jammin' doing garagey/breaks sort of stuff.

and the answer to the original question is "no".

the earliest i ever got to the blue note in hoxton square was about 96 for metalheadz....fuckin' wicked

wasnt bristol involved in the birth of drum and bass?

No.

Bristol and the West had a fine and massive drum and bass scene - particularly in the years running up to Reprazent winning the Mercury, but it was all well after things kicked off in London.

No way

I remember hearing 'stories' about The Metalheadz at the blue note as a nipper - I would have been 13 when you went there Milesy :D

:D

To be fair most parents would hate Goldie though.

I really like him as a person :)

garagey / breaks / Trip-hop / Jungle / Breakcore / Grime / mashup

No wonder the youth of today are so muddled up, they need a degree in musical terminology before they can buy a CD

*walks out with a rolled up newspaper under his arm and a cup of tea, comfortable with his pipe and slippers and a well used copy of London Calling ...

Sadly my experience is that Goldie's a totally arrogant sleazebag. Maybe he's got a good side somewhere or he's mellowed with age, but I couldn't get past the ginormous ego and the twattish behaviour. I wasn't the only one to find him an arsehole either - LQ found the same when she interviewed him for example

Shame really - the guy made some fantastic records and Metalheadz was a fabulous night in the early days, but he lost his quality control and a sense of humility all too quickly. Perhaps he's different now though - I caught him in the aftermath of Timeless, before reality bit and everyone realised that drum and bass artists weren't going to become the next boy bands.

Jealous of all you bastards who went to Metalheadz in the 90s  I was stuck in Newcastle at one of the 2 DnB nights we had up there - you'd see the same 20 people at everything :D

You've ruined my dream :(

indeed
in my day we used to live in the house and park the car in the garage
and the jungle was where wild animals lived
fnar fnar

Gawd, you guys are making me feel really old - It's not that long in the past it is? Metalheadz was still at the Blue Note till at least '97, with Dingwalls definitely just starting in '99, rolling for at least a good few years.

More worryingly I'm off to a loose reminder of the first gig I ever went to some 20 years ago now (I was just into my teens). It's Fresh Fest '06, complete with all sorts of old school hip hop legends. The crowd should be a lark to behold - all sorts of ageing b-boys and hip hop heads. Headspins may be at a premium...

:D

DnB has certainlly inflitrated the squat/ free-party scene and its sounding more punkish and militant each day that goes by... its a shame that all the old ravers are so apolitical.

Maybe DnB could finally fill the void of proper rebelious musical youth culture!

Anyone come across any overtly political DnB acts DnB mc's?

Do you mean drum and bass?

No.

DnB is for pussies.

when i went to metalheadz in '95 goldie was playing chess at the bar

You are correct that it was perfected in these parts.

Perfected's a bit rich, but I did love my time in Bath and Bristol. Ashton Court (in 99?), when Roni Size had his post-Mercury homecoming, was a truly fantastic day - tens of thousands of people, of all ages, bouncing along to beautiful basslines on a wonderfully afternoon.

But the Bristol sound would have been a dead end without Roni's crew tbh. Flynn & Flora, Decoder/Kosheen? Not a bleeding chance of respectability.

And without Bryan Gee, V Recording's head honcho and all round South London geezer, it's unlikely that even the V/Full Cycle crew would have got things rolling anywhere as nicely.

You'll have to face it. Bristol owes South London for its drum and bass sound...

;)

I tell you what. There hasn't been a Warhead remix for at least a week or so - must be time for another surely.

That Bristol sound eh. Whoever would have thought they could get away with remixing the same 5 tunes for the last 5 years or so...

;) :p
