Is America burning? (Black Lives Matter protests, civil unrest and riots 2020)

It's half a century after the Flying Saucer craze, but now in 2020 Americans really are being abducted by UFOs. Unidentified Federal Officers.

I know posting YouTube stuff can be frowned on here sometimes, but I hope someone finds this informative. It's a video about the legalities of the federal snatch squads, created by a lawyer and aimed at the general public.

Other countries' corruption always seems a lot more obvious than that of our own of course.
I was allowing (at least to some extent) for that. But maybe that's the thing - US corruption seems to be enshrined in the machinations of the State - it's positively legislated for...

It's funny how quickly we've all come to accept this new social instability as normal, at least when considering the news coming out of the United States. I mean if I were to hear about federal officers in unmarked cars abducting people and tear gassing protests where mayors are present in an EU country (even Hungary or Poland) I think I'd find it much more shocking. But almost nothing shocks about the US now. Back in my youth (in the 1990s) I don't think I even considered some of the unique aspects of the country as being particularly strange because of its enormous influence over UK popular culture -- things like the electric chair, the levels of gun ownership, the prevalence of batshit-mental evangelical churches. But now as the world unravels and America faster still, all those aspects stand out so sharply.

Trump's entire presidency has been marked by people being shocked at what he's just said/done.

Then that becomes the new norm ... and he soon sinks to yet new depths.

So...

Fucking hell.
America is truly jumping the shark.
e2a: I thought I was unshockable, but this is whole new terrirtory

As campaign strategies go, sending in federal goons to mess up unfriendly cities is a... bold one, certainly.

...you think this is bad?

Just wait to see how things escalate on the run up to November's election.

The weak mayor of Portland attempted to speak to demonstrators in front of the federal building last night. When the protests began about 2 months ago, he criticized the violent elements who vandalized and looted downtown. Last night, he didn't have a word to say about the vandalism. He was there to listen and thank the crowd. By his weakness, he and other city and state politicians have handed the Trump campaign a gift.
....Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said Wednesday night that he showed up to the protest to listen to demonstrators’ concerns. He did, but before the night was out, the mayor of a major American city had been tear-gassed and heckled off the streets......Many demonstrators expressed their disapproval of the mayor and chanted "resign" and "(expletive deleted) Ted Wheeler." At one point some chanted, "Tear gas Teddy, war crimes Wheeler."

By siding with and appropriating Trump's rhetoric, it is people like you who are enabling him.

The violent elements, the vandals... they wear badges (and in the case of the federal officers, they don't always).

I disagree of course. In my view many of the vandals dress in black and wear motorcycle helmets. They come ready to do battle with the cops. I'm not going to refrain from using certain rhetoric just because Trump uses similar phrases.

Would you describe the cops as heroes?

I don't believe he has done any such thing. Public opinion is moving to fast in the other direction

I didn't describe the cops as heroes. Those coming prepared to do battle with the cops do so because they like to fight the cops. I suppose they see themselves as revolutionaries. I've seen this behavior year after after year in Portland.

And you'd be supportive of the cops?

What do you think of the Proud Boys?
They are right wing nut cases who periodically come to downtown Portland to fight with anyone they can find. I've seen the cops attempt to keep the two groups apart. There's another group called Patriot Prayer that does the same thing.

I've seen the cops stand aside and watch while the Proud Boys attack people they suspect of being antifa. I've seen the footage.

For the most part, yes. When they cross the line and overreact, no.
How about when they virtually hug maskless far-right corona protesters, without holding any shields or weapons, without getting violent at all- whilst being much more at risk than they would be around peaceful mask wearing protesters that they unnecessarily brutalize?

I haven't seen them doing that. But, yes, that's crossing the line of course. Another time I saw them overreact was back during the occupy movement. There was an occupy Portland. I saw the end after the camp in a park downtown was closed down. There were about 100 hippie types......totally peaceful. Facing them were probably 150 cops with an armored vehicle. The protesters had a cool chant....."We don't see no riot here, put away that riot gear."
