Is America burning? (Black Lives Matter protests, civil unrest and riots 2020)

And if you want a picture of the future:

Also, things kicking off even further in Portland after the cops shot someone there as well.

Not too much shy of a 2 hour closing argument for the prosecution, defense up next in about 10 mins before the rebuttal.

Not sure if anyone has been or are watching this. Nelson as defense lawyer is imo coming across like the prosecution in his closing argument.

The defense has been pretty pathetic. The testimony about carbon monoxide poisoning as a contributing factor was silly.

Feels like this is probably the most appropriate thread to put this in:

america today and every day

Carolyn Sung was reportedly arrested on Tuesday while covering demonstrations in Hennepin County following the police shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, an incident that came during the trial of Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer accused of murdering George Floyd last year.

Sung was attempting to comply with a dispersal order when Minnesota State Police grabbed her "by her backpack, threw her to the ground, zip-typing her hands behind her back," according to her lawyer, Leita Walker.

Sung did not resist, the lawyer said, adding that one of the troopers allegedly yelled "Do you speak English?" at her during her detainment.

Seems to me, from how this is being spun by the cops, that she'll get away with it. I think I'm right in saying it should be a manslaughter charge, but police are treated differently by the law. No doubt there will be a large cash settlement paid out to the family some time in the future. But I don't expect the officer responsible to be found guilty. I hope I'm wrong.

Decent analysis here. It seems that for the manslaughter charge to stick they'll need to demonstrate she was not only negligent, but that she consciously chose to do something that carried a risk of causing death. Not sure if there is perhaps some lesser charge they could use:

Anyone know what time the verdict will be delivered?

Depends when they reach one - could be as soon as this morning, or they could be deadlocked for days, though with thousands of National Guard troops deployed they'll probably be under a lot of pressure to wrap it up quickly.

It’ll be 3pm UK time before the jury reconvene.
Hopefully it won’t be a hung jury.

the judge told the jury it can not be a mis-trail or hung jury. So the different sentence options are guilty of murder in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 1st degree manslaughter, then 2nd or 3rd degree. I am not sure, but if the jury find not guilty many more people may die in the streets in the next few weeks

If they’re split e.g. 6/6 over the 3 charges which is very possible, surely regardless of what the judge instructs it would be hung?

I mean, surely manslaughter is the lesser charge they could use compared to murder, which would be the standard charge most people would get if they shot someone to death? Like, it'd be a hell of a loophole if anyone can just shoot someone and say "oh sorry I didn't realise I had a gun in my hand, and so no crime was committed".
