Indiana Jones 4

Somethings are good at what they do
And by the same token, some things are not...

As has been said already, even if something doesn't have pretentions of being high art, and simply wants to be entertaining, it has to be good at that entertaining.

I think the general consensus on this thread is that Kingdom (gotta get into the habit of calling it that ;)) is that it succeeds in some areas and doesn't in others, not judging it in terms of high art but in terms of entertainment.

Just because people say something is bad, and can point out why they think so, does not mean they are misjudging it or 'don't get it'; whatever something aims for it can succeed of fail to hit it.

We saw IJ this afternoon and loved it! Sure, some bits were a bit silly but it was good fun and a film that the whole family can watch. Not too sure about the spaceship bit at the end though.......... :hmm:

The chase scenes were ace, the waterfall bit was great and I even got a bit scared and had to hold my little boys hand at one part. :D

The waterfall bit was particularly good - especially their resignation at the third one coming up. We also liked Indy climbing back on the motorbike, and running across the tops of the crates.

I found it all a bit silly, far-fetched, badly-plotted and badly-written - all things I didn't give a shit about when I was the age when I first saw Raiders. It feels kind of redundent to review from a cynical adult's point-of-view.

Sorry, Jaed. There is good shit and bad shit, often within the same canon.

Good shit:

Old star wars films
Die Hard
Terminator 1 and 2
Predator

Bad shit:

New star wars films
Die Hard 4
Aliens vs Predator

Awful, dreadful, abysmal shit:

Spawn
Lost In Space
Shakespeare In Love
Closer

(Well, to be honest, Shakespeare in love probably falls under the remit of being a 'bad good film', one which has pretensions to being something arty and great but is in fact fucking wank. Closer also comes under that one. But I put it here just to be irritating)

Excellent post (although I didn't think Die Hard 4 was that bad tbh)...

Well, quite. Listening to that kermode bloke slagging it on the radio just made me laugh...it's not FOR you mate...my two loved it. :)

its allllllright, i'd have enjoyed it if i was 12. john hurt was a mess in it - sadly.

Yep, my sprog hasn't shut up about it since. He now wants a toy whip though, which is a bit worrying. :)

I think its the way people tend to miss out the "IMO", and like to feel they are making pronouncements for everyone, or at least give out that impression. (IMO)

It was moderately enjoyable for what it was, but very forgettable, and definitely not the classics that Die Hard or ... with a Vengeance were.

The original Die Hard was ok, and refreshing the first time I saw it...

"...with a Vengeance" was forgettable. I've seen it, but can't remember any other details than it was about a plane(?).

Die Hard IV was silly if you've spent more than 10 secs dealing with computers. But enjoyable silliness (a truck wins against a plane... :hmm: ) at that. (ie, its an action film...)

That's Die Hard 2.

With a Vengeance is far better. It's got samuel l jackson in and involves bruce willis being made to stand in harlem with a sandwich board saying "I hate niggers", which if he doesn't do, the terrorist will blow up a building.

Fule! Die Hard 2 was the airport.

With a Vengance was Jeremy Irons and Samuel L Jackson. A real homage to the seventies blockbuster style

Why is it real terrorists don't do this...?

Get him a Mutt Williams toy flick knife :p

Just been to see it, it was great fun!

Best thing was....Cate Blanchette looking HOT!

Just asked the missus to put on a black wig and speak in a Russian accent but she just laughed :(

There was a pleasing amount of hotness all round.

I was loving Mutt as a not even subtle Marlon Brando off of the Wild Ones.
Awesome.

I couldn't tell if that was supposed to be a very obvious reference that said something about Mutt's character, or at least who he's trying to be, iyswim

One of my favourite bits was the ending though (the very ending mind, not the entire scene  ); you almost thought it was going to be even more trite, and then they pull a bit of a knowing swift one ;)

Vapid, pointless, slightly fun.
The whole franchise has run off the momentum and goodwill of Raiders. Yes even Crusade, which is wildly over-hyped.
