In praise of ITV4

I will fully concede that now TV Burp has finished I watch nothing on ITV's main channel, and I never deign to look at the schedules of ITVs 2 and 3, but ITV4 is turning itself into quite a decent little outpost, at least in terms of sport.

They've been showing highlights of the Tour de France for a few years now, but have upped their game in the last couple of years with live coverage too, and have followed it with Vuelta and Tour of Britain highlights. I've also got into their Premiership rugby highlights package, and for the new season an hour of Bundesliga highlights. They also give quite extensive coverage to the Europa League (UEFA Cup), which is a refreshing change from the torrent of hype regarding the Champions League, and you get to see European teams from outside the blockbusters.

Obviously they could improve, getting some live coverage of the Bundesliga or other foreign leagues, a bit of live club rugby, and show some of the one day classics and the Giro, but supposing they're operating on a reasonably small budget, I think they're doing really quite well.

Just something I've noticed over the last few months.

I have never watched it aside from the cycling. But cycling is on so much when it is on (an hour a day for 3 weeks just for the TdF highlights) that I probably watch more ITV4 than any other channel for a large proportion of the year.

For cycling coverage alone: two thumbs fresh!

An Ant and Deck free zone then.

Yup, count me in as a big fan of The Professionals and The Sweeney.
What ever happened to Lewis Collins. I thought he was ace.

Another thing they could pick up would be the North American sports unceremoniously dropped by C5 when Dirty Des took over. I used to enjoy Gould and JC on MLB back in the day, and loved the basketball in the Olympics.

Expanding their cycling coverage to MTB and BMX would be good too.

ITV4 (and 2 & 3 I guess) are quite good at showing the kind of classic films one just wants to watch. Lots of ad breaks sadly. But overall I watch them far more than the 'flagship' ITV1.

I plan to spend three consecutive hours watching ITV4 this evening; Rugby highlights, Tour of Britain and Vuelta a Espana highlights.

I’ve watched minder while sat in various hotel rooms quarantining, it gives me a weird sense of nostalgia and comfort that must come from being a kid on a bean bag in front of a fire with it in the back ground

That and tales of the unexpected

Tales of the Unexpected is on Sky Arts tho...

It tends to be on when OH gets in from work in the mornings and then again when he gets up in the afternoons to get ready for his next shift so I think we watched the entirety of Tales of the Unexpected over the last year :D
