In praise of Genesis

never got into them. recommend me a starter album please.

The three early 70's albums are worth a listen. Trespass, Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot. Selling England by the Pound, Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering have their moments. Duke seems to be the one to go to for their later poppy stuff.

Don't forget nursery cryme or seconds out.
Any of the Gabriel stuff really.
Yes, I like Nursery Chrymes ,and Foxtrot. Seconds Out not that keen on tbh , I prefer the 1973 live album However, I just think SEBTP is the most rounded album

I think one of the reasons I have a soft spot for them is that Phil Collins looked not like a rock star, but a geezer down the pub who was probably a painter and decorator.

Anyway, a sympathetic review from the Guardian

Yes far too dear for me. That said a local gig was looking like being nearly £40.

I suppose the typical Genesis fan is retired these days too, so maybe even more of a stretch.

Out of interest, I listened to Selling England by the Pound today, whimsical stuff I suppose but not really my thing. Think my parents had a few albums of that era. Still think I prefer the deeply uncool over-produced 80s stuff, the complex drum arrangements, and the emotion of Phil’s voice (Mama for example). But that’s the beauty of music, we all have different opinions, it’s just some of them are wrong (like mine :( :D )

The result was some of the strangest Top 10 singles of the era: Turn It on Again dives along despite being in four different time signatures; Mama – a song about that reliable hit-making topic, a teenager who develops an Oedipal fixation on a middle-aged sex worker – remains authentically creepy nearly 40 years on.
:)

The 80s stuff (especially up to and including "Genesis") is great. Don't think the cool/not cool factor matters as you progress beyond teens/twenties...

Not my kind of thing. But I took some very good whizz once with lsd and it’s probably the best drug experience I’ve ever had. And The Brazilian was playing and it was the best track I’d ever heard.
Not the same in the cold light of day though. Not even close to Aphex Twin.
