I'm buying music digitally now it seems

Yeah, I have the owned music on my hard drive, I suppose that has its own limitations in terms of space but so does owning anything.

I've recently started using Bandcamp, although not to the total exclusion of CDs. It's a way to get hold of stuff that my lonely local HMV doesn't stock, whilst still supporting the artists.

In terms of carbon footprint, downloads are the lightest, right? CDs and vinyl have the manufacturing, and streaming employs those massive, hungry servers.

My HiFi set up is Spotify, Mobile phone, and a pair of headphones. Albeit the £250 headphones have significantly improved my "audio experience"..

Streaming suits me - my CDs were always a complete mess - lost, broken cases, couldn't be arsed to put them back in boxes, step on them etc.

I don't know what the balance is but CDs and vinyl also have the transportation which I suspect will turn out to be the biggest source of CO2 for them. I'd feel pretty confident that streaming/downloading has a lower carbon footprint - or at least it would take a huge number of plays to to overcome the initial carbon cost of getting the CD/vinyl to you.

I'd guess a lot if not the majority of online plays are on systems that are going to be on regardless as well.

So apparently I'm buying music on cassette tapes now (had to preorder an album for gig tickets and that was the cheapest). I haven't owned a tape player in over twenty years
