HS2 high-speed London-Birmingham route rail project - discussion

They will be able to get onto the existing network and will be able to go as far as Edinburgh or Glasgow, the issue is that the cancelling of the northern parts of HS2 throttles the capacity of everything and hence the number of services.

Hopefully like HS1, people will see the benefit and they’ll go on to finish off the next bit to Manchester etc.

I'm not sure that selling a concession to run the line for 20 to 30 years is a good idea

How many new lines could they have reinstated instead of HS2, is the idle wonder that crossed my mind

Fuck all given this countries phobia of building infrastructure
yep, absolutely zero. Don't forget the talk of 'northern powerhouse rail' has been going on for about 15 years too - a new line, not necessarily high speed, across the north - and what have we got so far? some upgrading of a chunk of the existing line and endless downgrades of every other bit of the idea.

Yes fair points. Useful local and regional railway connections would transform areas and people’s lives, but it’s not shiny and sexy like a super fast train so politicians don’t give a fuck

The thing is HS2 opens up more slots and better local trains by splitting out some high speed from local lines. Which means more trains and better journeys on local lines.

The entire thing has been spun badly from the start and in a more sensible world it would have invested in the north first and gone down.

The north isn’t even fully electrified, it’s absolutely mad. Just complete failure to understand that linking communities together benefits everyone

I think it is more to do with very poor project management of major upgrades - almost normal by and large - for example the ill-fated West Coast main line upgrade some years back.

I can sleep relatively easy that in my time (when working) , I drove forward a few electrification schemes - for example in the North West - which Network Rail was not too keen on implementing .........(Chat Moss and Liverpool to Preston for example - it's not dead yet though with a move towards bi-modes and discontinuous electrification. I really annoyed them by getting the front cover of "Rail" magazine by saying "ATOC says electrify more" and a few targetted articles.

If some relaxation of strategic borrowing by HMG to allow infrastructure schemes to progress , then I would like to think we will seem some more schemes.

I do not sleep well though - other medical issues arising...........not worrying about electrfying !

Can anyone explain why a train that gets from London to Birmingham in 45 minutes gets a bog and a train that goes across London and takes over an hour doesn’t get one?
You would hope that this would bring relief but it's not quite what you are looking for
