How to survive a disaster movie.

Nothing wrong with a good disaster movie, especially if it's got someone worth watching (eg. Paul Newman in Towering Inferno) :D

Yes, but as for some of the heroines, I'm sorry but whenever one of them screams for the umpteenth time I just start wanting to tell the bitch to pull herself together.

ah but remember, it's not always the women who cause the trouble (although admittedly the men don't scream). It's quite often the man who panics

Why so snobby about disaster movies ?

I love them, especially the 70s ones.

There is nothing I find more comforting than a has-been film star on fire or Ava Gardener hitting the bottle in a crisis (which she did in at least three 70s disaster epics !). I even love the dregs of the genre like The Swarm and When Time Ran Out. I've got "Beyond the Poseidon Inferno" lined up for this week.

As to women screaming in a crisis, watch Shelley Winters save the day in the first Poseidon Adventure !

I love disaster movies - I find even the really shit ones (yes, "The Core", I am looking at you, worst disaster/sci-fi mess ever) hard to turn away from

I love The Core ! :)

I've sat through it twice now, first time by myself thinking 'why am I enjoying this pile of shite?' and the second time because I thought the OH would really enjoy just how bad it is! (He didn't).

I don't think The Core is a bad film at all and it isn't quite a disaster film either. Sure, the science won't win a Nobel prize (it's no worse than Sunshine in that regard, but that was shot by an trendy indie director, so it gets a free pass), but it has a fantastic cast and for the most part it's a fun Sunday afternoon sci-fi adventure film, along the lines of 60s classics like The Fantastic Voyage or Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. The shoe horned in disaster scenes were shot afterwards on orders of the studio, to tie it in with successful films like Armageddon (maybe the one disaster film I have no time for) and Deep Impact. Stanley Tucci's freak out when he realises that this is a one way trip, is a classic.

I love pretty much all disaster movies but my favourites are plane crashes or sinking boats. Bloody love the Poseidon adventure.

I'll watch pretty much anything if it involves some sort of disaster but I have a massive fear of most forms of transport. Hmmmm

and Towering Infernos and earthquakes and volcanoes and...

There was another train one about this new super duper high speed passenger train and the bloke that designed it saved the day.
Hurrah!

Armageddon is my fav' disaster movie, is in my fav' movies of all time list as it goes, I absolutely Love it and watch it prob once every 2 months and have done for years, I have it on VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, .AVI and now on my Sky+ box  my missus can't understand why I love it so much.

I did a list on IMDB of 70s'ish era disaster movies (sad maybe but I was bored at work)
The golden age of disaster movies

Apart from the Holy trinity of Towering Inferno, Poseidon Adventure & Earthquake, my favourites are the "nature strikes back" type films eg Kingdom Of The Spiders, Swarm & Piranha.

ah, now they're about the only ones I'm not into. Swarm was ok, and that Arachnid one was ok, but Piranha was just really bad :D
