How much should I sell my van for?

kalidarkone

Bringing YOU round.....
Lowered VW T4. 2.5 L DIESEL, MANUAL. 23 years old. 2000 plate.MOT till May. Has done nearly 200, 000 miles. Has a rock and roll bed that turns into seats.

I bought it for 5K in 2014.

Brilliant engine, but body work is fucked..
It would be a project. A big refurbishment.

I was thinking £1000.

Whatdoyoureckon?

Have you seen what similar vehicles are listing at?

My thoughts on 1k is that you won't have any room to negotiate.

Why not ask for 2 or 3k and let yourself accept a bid ..

Look on 'we buy any car' and then multiply by 1.5 as a starter for 10?

Hey Kali - what's the interior like?

Have you looked on the fb group VW T4/T5/T6, VW Camper Vans, Sales/Swaps And Trades UK

T4s with over 200k can go for c.4/4.5k depending on condition - 1 sold for 2k and it had a seized engine!

This one went for 4k but has loads of extras. Reckon you might get @ least 2k for yours? The market for them is pretty mad. Stick it on eBay with a reserve of £1500 & see what happens? If you phrase your ad cannily, you might get lucky. If you're not a member of that group ^, join up and put it on there too maybe. If nothing else, that group has got a shedload of erm sheds you could compare with.

I searched T4 on that group:

We buy any car doesn't take account of the fact that Kali's van is a camper. It just assumes it's a panel van (or whatever the V5 says)

The word on the Transporter FB groups is that values are falling, especially for Non Euro6 vans, and generally, Autumn is a bad time of year for selling a van, albeit the buyer may be someone looking for a winter project. What's the MOP on it?

£1k sounds realistic given what you've said. I might ask for £2k, but be prepared to reduce the price. I suspect the engine/parts would be worth at least £1k. Someone might well pay a few hundred quid for the rock and roll bed - they aren't cheap new. Maybe ask on a T4 FB group.

(The T4s are the best looking of the T4/T5/T6 models, but I've seen a few around that are starting to deteriorate badly body wise).

(I'd be delighted if I only lost £3k on my van after 9 years!)

Down here, there's a South Coast Transporters FB group, which is really helpful for finding local Transporter specilaists. It also has an"SCT Swap Shop page" for sales.

Out of curiosity I had a look at local Bristol groups. All I found was this

Might be worth posting on there. Not as a sale (they forbid that) but as a "Is there a local FB page that can help?" type thing.

Best of luck.

and the T5 is way cooler than the T6.

(not jealous of your wagon at all. Honest.)
It's making ominously expensive sounding noises from the front shocks (possibly) atm. I'm currently crossing fingers it's something cheaper (whilst also looking at Bilsteins...:hmm:)

I have two advisories off my last MOT to deal with and barn doors that won't open, the latter my own fault for changing the thing with lights over the number plates myself.

Transporters - a bit like Schroninger's Cat - simultaneously love 'em and hate 'em.

Mugs invest their dreams in campers. It should not be allowed. The gullible deserve a bit of protection.

I would advertise it with a new MOT , ready for travel. Four grand. But take £1800
I'm always amazed by people spending north of 30k on vans when they've never been camping. I've seen T6s with 80-90k miles on them going for £50k as they've got flashy looking interiors. Also seen some horrorshow electrics/ insulation in the same vans...

Like mx said up there though; it looks like it's slowing down a bit now. Lot of people going to lose a chunk of money over the next few years I'd guess.

It's partly "covid tax" - prices went up a stupid amount when we couldn't go abroad on holiday and even UK holidays were expensive. I bought in spring of 2021, and paid too much. I plan to run mine until either I pop my clogs or the van does, so hey ho.

Ulez is a problem for a lot of people. I'd pay £50k for a decent, Euro 6, properly converted T6.1 camper if I had the cash (and sadly I didn't win the Euromillions tonight) as it would see me out and I'd feel less guilty about the pollution side of things.

I get your point though. There's a 5.1 round the corner from me that hasn't moved for a year as far as I can see.

Got to be worth 3k easy in Bristol. I wouldnt take a penny under 2.5k. Plenty of people want a cheap van like this they can sort out.

Nationwide search on gumtree basically confirms my suspicions. Even pretty rotten bodywork ones going for 2.5k+

.

Spot lights no longer work. Some of the electrics are quite fucked. Corroded.
It's insulated.
No hook up etc.

Around the windscreen it's all rotten so water gets in .

The sliding door mechanism Has corroded at the bottom and it nearly fell off whilst driving 😮. Had to tie the door to the bed and Boris Sprinkler 🤣 in order to anchor it and drive safely back from Buckingham.

Now the gear stick has seized and I can't even move it.

The most work I'm prepared to do on it is get the gear stick /box sorted if it's simple (like just needs fluid etc) I think it's corroded though. We were really lucky to get home safely.
Also get the bottom sliding door mechanism fixed.
No one has been able to open the back doors for years.....

Anyway all good ideas. I will check some of the forums. I'm considering rejoining fb just for this purpose but will be a last resort as I have no wish to re enter that toxic pool....

Ah. Spares for a grand then. Unless you include Boris Sprinkler in the sale to hold the door on, then possibly 1200?

Out of interest how much were you paying insurance?

My t4 was a panel van no fancy shit what so ever. So every year I would shop around on the van insurance web sites. This time I'm having to go to specialist camper van and modified vehicle insurance companies.

Also, I in a live in a gentrified inner-city area and park on the street. Insurance has generally gone up, but also this area in particular it has gone up cus lots of well off middle classes now living here so crime is up.

I use Howden - specialist camper insurance (make sure you get Thatcham branch). My insurance is less than £300 a year, but it's parked off road, limited mileage, no commuting, and probably worth a quarter of yours!
