How many HR officers do you need?

The motivation/aim will differ according to the individual - as with any job. As indeed with those ones where you ascribe motivations according to your perception rather than - maybe - the motivations of the people doing those jobs.

The HR people I know, their motivation is to actually fight for and help employees, to make sure the company is fulfilling it's obligations to employees etc. So yes, because they cared.

I've also seen people who just *fell into* HR and are just puppets of the company.

we have 3 people in hr. and about 600 employees, with a lot of staff turnover.

no one asipres to be in HR. our HR lady used to be a gymnast.

Rubbish.

People study for years to become CIPD.

I hate the fact there is no HR where I work. Everything is a constant fucking battle with no real help.

This thread is making me laugh. I work in HR and have done so for 10 years :p

Some of the sweeping statements about HR people aren't true, but as in all jobs some are cnuts.

Personally I love the legal side to all, negotiating and ensuring our employees get a fair deal.

Bit boring for some but whatever floats yer boat ;)

no one at the age of 8 when asked what to do do they say "when i grow up i want to be in HR"

once your are in it as a job you may as well make the most of it I agree.

No, at age 8 they want to be astronaughts and fireman....

I'd say there's a difference between people that fall int HR and HR Professionals. And yes, HR professional DO CHOSE to study for it.

I wanted to be an accountant.

I do all the HR for a charity employing nearly 30 people on top of all my other duties as Office Manager so it does sound as if your HR dept is overstaffed!

Absolutely correct. It's not some fluffy non proffessional field of work. not if you're HR peple know what they're doing.

Quite a few don't. But if you're CIPD qualified you will have to have studied a fair bit of law as well as business theory.

Actually there's HR management degrees contain a lot of that as well.

One of my first proper jobs was in the HR department of a large finance company. I am proud to say I was a bone idle waster for the duration of my employment there.

As part of my role was to produce sickness reports for management, this seemed like the only ethical working practice. I was very good, at being bad, at producing these reports. They consistently arrived late... if they arrived at all. For months none were produced at all as I marvelled the sophisticated query required to extract such complex data from our databases.

I realised it was time to move on when I began to entertain myself by finding out how long I could hold my breath for. I became quite good at this and could hold my breath for over three minutes towards the end of my HR career.

The moral of my tales is not to judge the idlers in HR. It is the hard working busybodies in HR you need to watch out for.

My X is an HR officer and finishing her CIPD at the moment.

3 minutes? That's impressive. You should have considered pearl diving.
:D

Where I work, they have just cut HR by 50% (this leaves about 50 staff). Plus consultants are coming into HR at the senior level.

In the past people have moaned about HR but now they will be saying where is HR now that I need them?. I think the end game will be to out source HR completely.
