How many HR officers do you need?

Hollis

bloody furious
Is there some sort of industry standard?

In my place - a workforce of about 60-70 people, we have 2.5 in HR.. surely 1.5 too many.. What the hell do they do all day?

I think one of them must spend their time thinking up things for the other 1.5 to do and working on proposals to hire another HR person. They can get away with this kind of stuff because they speak their own HR language, incomrehensible to outsiders...

You need lots and lots of HR people cos they do really important stuff, like deciding what colour of paper clips are acceptable, and whether you are allowed to bring your own coffee mug to work.

I can remember 'Staff Dept' at some City banks... :(

My fave was Morgan Stanley in London in the mid-90s..

...Office of Human Development

**vomit**

Yeah, develop this, junior banker....

Whatever happened to the ‘Personnel Dept.’, what’s this HR crap?

I refused to be labelled as a ‘resource’!
It's a horrible term isn't it. I really can't understand why companies don't refer to "people".

They're all complete cunts without exception.

You need one jumped up PA to take on HR stuff once you get to 50 employees.

Then it rises incrementally.

Wasters - all of them.

Don't fall in love too quickly man, I make the same over generalised rubbish statements about recruitment consultants

Now! Now! no need to get defensive.. how many would you expect for 60 employees?? I feel 2.5 is too much..

how do you get 1/2 a human resources officer .hope it involves a chain saw:D

i know it means a part timer but chainsaw is what these people need.

Hmmm

Secretary /PA looking after the never ending admin - say 1/2 a job

Some fresh faced graduate or equivalent as a full time

1.5 max for 60 employees unless the owners invest further

My question is why does anyone end up in HR? It's not really an ambition is it? Is it a path to somewhere better, cos it doesn't look like it? Why?

I know a guy who works in HR, its very well paid and he knows his stuff inside out.
He's just helped me sort my shit with my employer so I came out of it completely hunky dory and them doing a massive U turn so maybe they arent all shits after all;)

Not taking the piss, more curious! I mean... certain things you end up in because it's what you're good at, enjoy, have a background in etc like engineering or IT. Some things you end up in because you care, like health or social jobs. Some you end up in more for personal gain like finance, management, politics. Where does HR fit in, what's the motivation/aim? And don't start with the cashier thing - people do choose it, so there must be one!
